Dogecoin's official X account couldn't resist a playful jab at President Donald Trump over the weekend. After Trump posted an image of the lunar surface with the text "THE MOON IS OURS" on Truth Social, the memecoin's account fired back: "Ahem, there is a queue."
For those not steeped in crypto lore, "DOGE to the moon" is slang for the dog-themed coin's price skyrocketing to parabolic highs. But what started as a joke is becoming surprisingly literal.
Elon Musk, a longtime Dogecoin enthusiast, said in February that his space company, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SPCX), will likely put the memecoin "on the moon" next year. And there's an actual mission in the works: DOGE-1, a lunar orbital mission by Canadian firm Geometric Energy Corporation, is paid for entirely in Dogecoin. Originally slated for a 2022 launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, it's faced delays—but now it's targeting a Sept. 14 launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
So, while Trump claims the moon for America, Dogecoin might just get there first—or at least have a dog in the race. At the time of writing, DOGE was trading at $0.09145, up 0.66% in the last 24 hours and 8% over the week, according to market data.
