Hunter Biden, son of former President Joe Biden, is getting into the memecoin game with a token that leans into his most infamous moment. The coin, aptly named LAPTOP, is set to launch Wednesday on Base, the Layer 2 blockchain built by Coinbase Global Inc. (COIN), according to a Wall Street Journal report citing people familiar with the matter.
The name is a direct nod to the 2020 scandal that erupted when Hunter Biden's personal laptop surfaced, containing messages about foreign business dealings and explicit photos. That discovery sparked a wave of investigations, conspiracy theories, and endless digital content. Now, it's a cryptocurrency.
Here's the structure: the founders, including Hunter Biden himself, will keep 30% of the one billion tokens issued. Those founder tokens are locked for six months, meaning they can't be sold during that period, and they'll fully vest over two years. So, no immediate dumping by insiders, at least for a while.
Hunter Biden teased the memecoin in a short video on X, stitching together news clips, New York Post headlines, and accusatory statements from President Donald Trump. The video ends with a simple message: "$LAPTOP September 9." He didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
Memecoins from politically connected figures aren't new. The Trumps have their own, including Official Trump (CRYPTO: TRUMP) and Official Melania (CRYPTO: MELANIA). But those have seen massive drawdowns since their post-launch hype. Trump himself made over $635 million in royalties from his memecoin, according to official disclosures, while those who bought at the peak lost 97% of their money.
Here's where it gets interesting: the WSJ report notes that 20% of LAPTOP's supply will be distributed, in two batches, to wallets of people who lost money on TRUMP. That's a clever, if slightly cheeky, way to court a disgruntled crowd.
Hunter Biden's crypto pivot isn't entirely out of left field. He's accepted Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) for his artwork and has issued blockchain-based certificates of authenticity. He's also been vocal about his views, calling fiat currencies a "sham" and describing decentralized digital currency and blockchains as the "inevitable future."
So, will LAPTOP follow the typical memecoin trajectory of a quick pump and then a crash? Or will the airdrop strategy and the novelty of the story give it staying power? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: the line between politics, scandal, and crypto continues to blur, and Hunter Biden is now firmly in the mix.
