Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos said housing costs are intensifying political frustration, while warning that leaders who blame landlords may be avoiding the harder task of increasing construction.
On Wednesday, Bezos discussed the growing support for socialism with Fox News' chief political anchor Bret Baier on "Special Report." Speaking at Blue Origin's factory in Cape Canaveral, Florida, Bezos acknowledged that expensive housing can prevent younger workers from living near their jobs. "You can't pretend that there are no problems," he said.
Bezos stated that a lot of government interventions that have happened in the housing sector have been "counterproductive."
The billionaire argued that policies supporting demand while restricting new development can drive prices higher. He cited Austin as an example of a city that has made it easier to build housing and where housing prices are going down.
"Some politicians are governing correctly on this issue. But Many are not," he said.
He also urged voters to scrutinize politicians who emphasize blame over practical measures. "If there's a politician who's picking villains and pointing fingers, that probably means they don't have a solution," Bezos said.
"When you're in the polling booth and you're thinking about who you're going to vote for, think about this," he said, adding that politicians who have real solutions would focus on addressing root causes rather than blaming others.
Bezos applied the same standard to executives at his companies, Amazon, Blue Origin or Prometheus, saying those who only point fingers instead of finding real fixes would be quickly removed.
Housing Market Shows Signs Of Strain
U.S. housing executives say the market has entered a "soft period" as mortgage rates remain above 7%, weighing on demand and increasing borrowing pressures.
KB Home (KBH) and Lennar Corp. (LEN) both cited worsening market conditions in their third-quarter earnings reports.
Freddie Mac data showed the 30-year fixed mortgage rate averaged 7.28% as of Oct. 1.
Bezos' Growing Ties With Trump
Bezos' comments come after a series of increasingly visible interactions with the Trump administration. In December 2024, Amazon.com pledged $1 million toward President Donald Trump's inauguration. Bezos praised Trump's election victory as an "extraordinary political comeback."
In March 2025, Trump praised Bezos' changes at The Washington Post, saying Bezos was "trying to do a real job" with the newspaper. Bezos' changes, including ending presidential endorsements, revising op-ed policies and restructuring the newsroom, have drawn backlash, subscription cancellations and staff departures. Critics have accused Bezos of seeking favor with Trump for business interests, a claim Bezos has rejected, saying the changes aim to rebuild reader trust.
In June 2025, Blue Origin executives were reportedly discussing government contracts with the administration after Trump and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk publicly split. Bezos reportedly spoke with Trump at least twice, while Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp met with Trump's chief of staff. The discussions reportedly focused on encouraging the administration to potentially award more government contracts to Blue Origin, as the company has struggled to match SpaceX's dominance in the space industry.
