GameStop (GME) shares popped nearly 5% in Monday's premarket trading, and it's not hard to see why. The company just gave investors a peek at its second-quarter numbers, and while sales are sliding, profits are looking mighty fine. Plus, there's a new twist in its convertible debt saga that involves a chunk of cash.

Q2 Sales Fall As Profit Climbs
For the quarter, GameStop expects net sales of $780 million to $800 million. That's a drop from the $972.2 million it brought in during the same period last year, but it's still above the $756.85 million analysts were looking for. The company blames the decline mostly on the Nintendo Switch 2 launch last year, planned store closures, and the sale of its France operations.
But here's where it gets interesting: operating income is expected to jump to $150 million-$170 million, up from $66.4 million a year ago. And net income? Projected at $290 million-$310 million, compared to $168.6 million last year. That's a big leap, and it's not just from selling more Funko Pops.
GameStop says the quarterly net income includes about $238 million in gains tied to its eBay (EBAY) derivative asset and equity investment. That's partially offset by roughly $75 million in losses on digital assets and related receivables. So, the meme stock king is getting a nice boost from its side hustle in eBay shares.
eBay Investment Weighs On Cash Balance
Speaking of eBay, GameStop's cash pile is taking a hit. The company expects cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities of $5.050 billion to $5.070 billion, down from $8.694 billion a year earlier. That's a significant drop, but it's partly because GameStop converted its previously disclosed eBay derivative position into a direct equity investment during the quarter.
As of Aug. 1, GameStop held approximately 43.4 million eBay shares with a fair value of about $4.947 billion. So, while the cash balance is lower, the company now owns a big chunk of eBay outright. That's a different kind of liquidity.
GameStop Shifts Part Of Debt Exchange To Cash
In a separate move, GameStop amended its previously announced exchange involving approximately $1.4 billion of convertible senior notes due in 2030 and 2032. Originally, the plan was to swap those notes entirely for stock. Now, the company will settle the exchange with approximately 55.5 million shares and $358.4 million in cash. The amendment fixes the total number of shares issuable, with no additional shares due. That's a smart move to avoid further dilution, which has been a concern for shareholders.
After the exchange closes, about $2.8 billion of the 2030 and 2032 notes will remain outstanding. GameStop expects the amended exchange to close around Sept. 3, and it plans to report complete second-quarter results on Sept. 8.
So, what's the takeaway? GameStop is still a volatile stock, but this preview shows a company that's managing its finances creatively. Sales are down, but profits are up, thanks to smart investments and cost-cutting. And the debt exchange tweak shows management is listening to investor concerns about dilution. It's a mixed bag, but the market seems to like it for now.
GME Stock Price Activity: GameStop shares were up 4.76% at $18.72 during premarket trading on Monday, according to market data.
