Kura Sushi is making a big push in the United States, aiming to hit 100 locations by the end of the year and eventually grow to 300. The conveyor-belt sushi chain has been turning heads lately, not just for its expansion plans, but because President Donald Trump disclosed a multimillion-dollar stake in its U.S. subsidiary. That's notable because Trump has never been shy about his disdain for sushi.

Overseas Growth Is the Only Path Forward
In an interview with The Asahi Shimbun, Hiroyuki Okamoto, the company's director and general manager of public relations and investor relations, explained why the U.S. is so critical. With Japan's population shrinking, domestic growth is limited. "As for the U.S. market, we intend to continue our efforts until we have 300 outlets," Okamoto said, noting that a research firm had projected that figure as achievable when Kura Sushi USA Inc. (NASDAQ: KRUS) went public in 2019.
Trump's Stake in February
Trump disclosed a stake in Kura Sushi USA, valued between $1 million and $5 million, according to an Office of Government Ethics filing dated Feb. 2. The disclosure raised eyebrows, given Trump's history with sushi. According to the 1993 book "Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump," Trump bluntly refused to eat raw fish during a 1990 visit to Tokyo, opting instead for McDonald's hamburgers throughout the trip.
