Cathie Wood's Memory Warning
The rebound comes as investors digest some pointed comments from Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood, who has cast doubt on the staying power of the memory-chip boom. Wood says she's steering clear of memory-dependent AI chip stocks, viewing the surge in memory prices as a red flag rather than a golden opportunity.
In her view, high-bandwidth memory is the "most cyclical" and "most commoditized" part of the semiconductor supply chain. Instead, she's throwing her support behind AI chipmakers like Cerebras Systems Inc. (CBRS) and Groq, which she notes don't require high-bandwidth memory.
While Wood didn't name Micron directly, the company is one of the world's largest DRAM manufacturers. Her argument is that unusually high memory prices could push the semiconductor industry to find workarounds, potentially undermining the current demand surge.
Micron, for its part, has been positioning memory as a cornerstone of the AI buildout. In June, CEO Sanjay Mehrotra called memory a "strategic asset" in the AI era. The company has also locked in 16 long-term customer agreements, representing roughly $100 billion in cumulative revenue through 2030.
Technical Analysis
Looking at the charts, Micron is trading about 5.6% above its 20-day simple moving average of $895.86, but remains about 1.7% below its 50-day SMA of $962.57. The stock is still well above its 100-day SMA of $789.96 and 200-day SMA of $560.12, keeping the longer-term trend bullish despite the recent volatility.
The relative strength index sits at 52.61, signaling neutral momentum. Traders might keep an eye on $1,012 as a resistance level, while $891.50 could offer support near the 20-day moving average.
Earnings and Analyst Outlook
Micron's next earnings report is expected around Sept. 22, 2026. Analysts are forecasting earnings of $31.27 per share, a massive jump from $3.03 a year earlier. Revenue is projected to hit $50.81 billion, up from $11.31 billion.
The stock carries a Buy consensus rating with an average price target of $1,537.50. Recent analyst actions have been mixed: Citigroup maintained a Buy rating on Aug. 7 but trimmed its price target to $1,150. KeyBanc maintained an Overweight rating and raised its target to $1,750 on July 14. Cantor Fitzgerald also maintained an Overweight rating and bumped its target to $2,000 on June 29.
MarketDash Edge Rankings
Micron's MarketDash Edge rankings show strong Momentum, Growth, and Quality scores. The stock boasts a Momentum score of 99.61, a Growth score of 92.72, and a Quality score of 97.37. However, its Value score lags at 30.46.
MU Price Action
In Wednesday premarket trading, Micron shares rose 0.66% to $947.
