President Donald Trump said Saturday he directed the Justice Department to examine what he described as threatening behavior by Democratic leaders toward Republican officials and their supporters, though he did not identify the communications he was referencing.

In his Truth Social post, Trump argued Democrats were using impeachment talk and other penalties as leverage, calling it "extortion at the highest level," and said he wanted the DOJ to move "immediately!"

Trump's DOJ Directive

Trump's message singled out Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) and claimed she intended to target young people who align with Republican values. He appeared to be pointing to Slotkin's Oct. 13 remarks at a University of Chicago event about discouraging graduates from taking jobs in a Trump administration.

Trump's call for a DOJ probe comes after federal authorities previously looked at Slotkin and other Democrats tied to a November 2025 video urging service members to refuse illegal orders connected to airstrikes targeting boats in the Caribbean, as reported by CNBC. Slotkin said she and those around her faced physical and legal intimidation after the video circulated.

Trump later labeled that video treason and said "an example must be set," and the FBI contacted lawmakers days afterward, according to the report. Slotkin declined a Justice Department interview request in February and said at the time, "The intimidation is the point, and I'm not gonna go along with that," and a federal grand jury ultimately declined to indict participants.

What Does Cabinet Shake-Up Mean For Governance?

The order lands as Trump has also been talking about maybe a few changes to his cabinet after midterm results shifted control of both chambers of Congress to Democrats.

Staffing changes were already unfolding even before Trump's latest directive, including Trump saying Friday that chief of staff Susie Wiles would leave and adviser Stephen Miller would take over. Another departure involved Justice Department official Harmeet Dhillon, an assistant attorney general who led the Civil Rights Division.

Trump's DOJ order also leaned on the idea that Democrats were sending threatening letters to "many people" he described as innocent, without naming the lawmakers involved.

Impeachment Rhetoric: A New Political Battlefield

Impeachment talk has been aimed at officials including Attorney General Todd Blanche and Pete Hegseth, with Democrats arguing for accountability after taking

Hegseth has also faced pressure from the right, with Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) saying he planned to push for a vote and calling his own resolution "a much gentler version of what's coming when Dem's control Congress. They'll have hearings & trials."
