A US military aircraft fired on a commercial vessel in the Gulf of Oman on Saturday, disabling the ship amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

US Central Command (Centcom) said in a post on X that the ship's civilian crew "ignored repeated warnings" and tried several times to violate the naval blockade against Iran. The cargo vessel tried to leave regional waters after visiting an Iranian port, Centcom said.

Blockade Reach Widens

Since July, US forces have turned back 147 commercial vessels that complied, Centcom said in a Saturday press release. The five ships that refused were disabled.

On Friday, the US struck Iranian air defense sites. President Donald Trump called the action "minor." It was the first strike on Iran since the midterm elections.

Midterm Fallout Adds Pressure

The war with Iran is now in its ninth month. In a social media post after the midterms, Vice President JD Vance wrote that the war was the reason Republicans lost. He said President Trump had acknowledged this himself.

On his podcast, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) named cost of living as a "top issue" after Democrats won statewide races in Texas. He said tariffs have made goods too expensive and the war "has dragged on too long."

A Gallup poll released before the midterms found 47% of voters called the war an "extremely" important issue. Another 30% called it "very" important.

The renewed escalation comes amid steep weekly losses for Brent crude and US West Texas Intermediate (WTI). Brent fell more than 16% on the week, while WTI dropped nearly 13%.
