Anthony Scaramucci, the SkyBridge Capital founder who famously lasted about ten days as White House communications director, has found a new target: Secretary of State Marco Rubio. On Saturday, Scaramucci took to X to urge followers to "remember little Marco in 2028," adding that voters should recall where Rubio stood "when the country needed him."
The post was a response to a clip shared by Eric Daugherty, a conservative commentator and chief content officer at Florida's Voice, a conservative news network. Daugherty said Rubio stood beside President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago and made clear he is not resigning. In the clip, Rubio said the world cannot tolerate the "most radical terroristic regime on the planet" holding a weapon of mass destruction.
Exit Rumors and 2028 Talk
The jab lands amid a swirl of speculation about Rubio's future. According to a report published Thursday by The Independent, Rubio may be weighing an exit from the administration to prepare for a possible 2028 presidential run. The outlet cited unnamed Republican and British government sources. Rubio has not announced plans to resign or run, and in September he said he had "no plans at this time" to seek the presidency.
The White House rejected the report, calling it "baseless, false conspiracy theories," according to TNND. The State Department also dismissed it as "completely baseless fake news." Rubio himself has pushed back on the speculation before, saying that staying through Trump's term has "always been my plan."
The chatter follows Republicans losing control of both the House and Senate in the November midterms, a result that has set off plenty of jockeying and second-guessing inside the party. On Saturday, Scaramucci also urged Vice President JD Vance and Rubio to seek Trump's removal after those midterm losses.
Vance and Rubio are both widely viewed as possible Republican contenders to replace Trump in the future, which explains why every signal about their loyalty, or lack thereof, gets magnified. For now, Rubio is publicly sticking with the president, and Scaramucci is making sure nobody forgets it.
