Here's a political pitch you don't hear every day: a Democratic Senate candidate offering to help a Republican president keep his own campaign promises.
James Talarico, the Democrat running for U.S. Senate in Texas, said he would seek cooperation with President Donald Trump on healthcare, housing and regulatory changes. He made the comments on "The Diary of a CEO" podcast, published on Monday.
"I would love, as the next U.S. senator from Texas, to work with Donald Trump to actually fulfill some of the promises of his political project," Talarico said.
He argued there was still time for Trump to make good on those promises through bipartisan cooperation during the final two years of his term.
Talarico said Trump's "Make America Great Again" platform promised to transform government for people who had been left behind or forgotten. He said he would work with Trump or fellow Democrats to broaden healthcare access, build millions of homes and "slash the red tape."
The Democrat also described the upcoming midterm elections as a potential "wake up call" for the president, urging the administration to "reverse course" and work with both parties for working Americans.
"If the people of this country elect leaders who are going to check the president, I think it could be a rebirth for his presidency," he said.
