SK Hynix Explores Japan Memory Venture
SK hynix is looking at a potential memory-chip joint venture in Japan, a strategic play to capture more value from the AI boom while keeping production costs in check. Chairman Chey Tae-won said the company is evaluating several locations across Japan, with reliable access to power and water ranking high on the priority list, according to a Bloomberg report on Monday.
Chey didn't spill details on potential partners, specific locations, or which products might be involved. But a person familiar with the discussions told Bloomberg that SK hynix could also consider a small acquisition in Japan. The final structure, whether a joint venture or co-investment, would depend on the partner and product.
AI Demand Drives Global Expansion
This isn't just a whim. A Japan investment would expand SK hynix's manufacturing footprint at a time when demand for high-bandwidth memory and NAND is skyrocketing, fueled by AI spending. The company is already ramping up production in South Korea and building an advanced memory packaging facility in Indiana.
SK hynix is also deepening ties with Japanese customers and suppliers. CEO Kwak Noh-Jung recently remarked that the company is "carefully looking at how we can co-develop the NAND flash market with our customers and suppliers." Chey has also pointed to the growing economic synergy between South Korea and Japan, noting that the two countries can complement each other as cooperation strengthens.
Miyagi Plant Also Under Consideration
Earlier reports hinted that SK hynix is mulling a memory-chip plant in Japan's Miyagi prefecture, with potential investment running into tens of trillions of won. Chey recently visited the region. If the project moves forward, it would mark the first large-scale semiconductor manufacturing investment in Japan by a South Korean chipmaker.
