Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) shares were drifting lower in premarket trading Thursday, even as the broader market pointed modestly higher. Nasdaq futures ticked up 0.07%, and S&P 500 futures gained 0.18%. But Micron's slide isn't about bad news. In fact, the industry backdrop looks pretty good right now.

AI Storage Demand Boosts NAND Market
The company is riding a wave of demand for higher-value NAND products, according to Counterpoint Research. Artificial intelligence is fueling enterprise storage needs, and that's showing up in the numbers. Enterprise solid-state drives accounted for 48% of global NAND shipments in the second quarter, nearly double their 26% share a year earlier. Counterpoint says rising AI inference demand has tightened supply and helped push industry revenue to record levels.
Micron Holds 13% Of NAND Shipments
So where does Micron stand in this booming market? It held about 13% of NAND shipments in Q2. That puts it behind Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (OTC:SSNLF), SK hynix Inc. (NASDAQ:SKHY), privately held Yangtze Memory Technologies Co. (YMTC), and Kioxia Holdings Corporation. YMTC, the Chinese memory maker, actually captured a larger 14% shipment share. But here's the twist: Micron still beat YMTC on revenue. Sandisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) held an 11% shipment share.
Premium NAND Mix Could Drive Profitability
Counterpoint's takeaway is that NAND profitability through 2027 will hinge less on shipping more bits and more on selling the right mix of higher-value products. That's good news for suppliers with strong exposure to premium enterprise storage, especially as AI infrastructure keeps expanding. Micron's position in that premium segment might matter more than raw shipment numbers.
Against that backdrop, Thursday's dip puts more attention on Micron's technical levels, especially after the stock's recent consolidation.
Micron Technical Analysis
Micron traded 3.4% above its 20-day simple moving average of $879.08. However, it remained 5.8% below its 50-day SMA of $965.16. The longer-term trend looks stronger: Micron traded 18.5% above its 100-day SMA of $767.27 and 66.8% above its 200-day SMA of $545.19.
The relative strength index stood at 50.23. An RSI near 50 signals neutral momentum, meaning neither buyers nor sellers have a clear edge right now. The 20-day SMA sitting below the 50-day SMA is a bearish short-term signal, but the 50-day SMA above the 200-day SMA keeps the longer-term bullish trend intact.

- Key support: $891.50, near the 20-day exponential moving average of $891.82.
