It's a classic Thursday morning for tech stocks: a little bit of this, a little bit of that. Nasdaq futures are down a hair, S&P 500 futures are up a hair, and SanDisk (SNDK) is slipping about 0.5% in premarket trading. Nothing dramatic, just the market catching its breath after a big run.
But while the stock is taking a breather, the company is doing anything but. On Wednesday, SanDisk and Kioxia unveiled their ninth-generation, high-performance 2-terabit QLC 3D flash memory. That's a mouthful, but here's the simple version: it's faster, more efficient storage designed for the AI era.
The new tech uses what they call CMOS directly Bonded to Array, or CBA, architecture. Think of it as taking the brains (CMOS wafer) and the memory (array platform) and gluing them together in a smarter way. The result? Higher read and write bandwidth, better power efficiency, and a NAND interface speed of 4.8 gigabits per second. That's a 33% improvement over the previous generation.
Why should you care? Because AI is a storage hog. All those models need to read and write massive amounts of data, and the faster you can do that, the better. The companies say this design can get advanced storage to market quicker without blowing up manufacturing costs. And with AI adoption growing, they're betting on demand for faster, more efficient storage in the cloud and beyond.
Now, let's talk about the stock itself. SanDisk is hovering right around its 20-day simple moving average of $1,333.38, sitting about 0.4% above it. That sounds fine, but here's the catch: it's 19.5% below its 50-day SMA of $1,663.20 and about 3% below its 100-day SMA of $1,380.80. In plain English, the short-term trend is okay, but the intermediate trend is still pointing down.
The relative strength index (RSI) is at 46.77, which is neutral territory. Not overbought, not oversold, just kind of hanging out. The moving averages are also sending mixed signals: the 20-day is below the 50-day (bearish), but the 50-day is above the 200-day (bullish). So, a tug of war.
Key levels to watch: resistance at $1,446.50 and support at $1,325. If the stock breaks below that support, things could get interesting. On the flip side, it's still about 50.6% above its 200-day SMA of $889.20, so the long-term trend remains positive despite the recent pullback.
What about the analysts? The stock has a Buy consensus with an average price target of $2,114.77. That's a big upside from current levels, but recent actions show some caution. Argus Research upgraded to Buy on Aug. 10. RBC Capital maintained Sector Perform but raised its target to $1,300 on Aug. 6. Wells Fargo kept Equal-Weight and cut its target to $1,400 on Aug. 6. So, mixed signals from the pros.
If you're into momentum, SanDisk scores a 99.87 on that front, which is about as high as it gets. But its value score is a paltry 17.96. That's a red flag for valuation, even if the stock has been on a tear.
For ETF watchers, SanDisk has notable exposure in a few funds. The Invesco S&P 500 Pure Growth ETF (RPG) has a 9.61% weighting, the Global X Nasdaq 100 Covered Call ETF (QYLD) is at 7.64%, and the First Trust US Equity Opportunities ETF (FPX) holds 7.37%. Big inflows or outflows from these funds can add to buying or selling pressure, so keep an eye on them.
As of premarket Thursday, SNDK was down 0.45% at $1,338.21. Not a huge move, but enough to keep traders on their toes.
