United Parcel Service, Inc. (NYSE:UPS) is proving that delivering fewer packages can be good for business — provided the ones it keeps pay better. The delivery giant raised its 2026 outlook after third-quarter results showed improving domestic margins and stronger international revenue, offering fresh evidence that its retreat from lower-margin Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) shipments is reshaping its business economics.

UPS' New Strategy: Fewer Packages, Better Economics
UPS reported $22.9 billion in third-quarter revenue, up 6.7% year over year, and adjusted earnings per share of $1.69, beating analysts' expectations of $1.63.
The results reflect a deliberate strategic shift. UPS has reduced lower-margin deliveries for Amazon, its largest customer, freeing capacity to focus on shipments that generate better returns. UPS completed the planned volume reductions in the second quarter and is now testing whether its leaner network can sustain stronger profitability.
The shift is visible in domestic operations. Revenue in UPS' U.S. Domestic Package segment increased 4.5% to $14.9 billion, even as average daily package volume fell to 15.6 million from 16.2 million a year earlier. Revenue per package rose 6.1%, while adjusted operating margin improved to 7% from 6.4%, according to the company's third-quarter earnings release.
In other words, UPS generated more revenue from each package on average, helping offset lower shipment volumes. But the strategy also leaves the company needing to replace lost Amazon business with sufficiently profitable demand elsewhere.
The Growth Must Continue
International operations provided another boost. Revenue increased 7.1% to $5 billion, while adjusted operating margin reached 14.9%. UPS also said it remains on track to deliver approximately $3 billion in benefits from its efficiency initiatives this year.
CEO Carol Tomé said the results reflected "the continued strengthening of our business fundamentals, driven by premium growth and greater network efficiency." She added that UPS was entering the holiday shipping season with the most automated and efficient network in its history.
That seasonal period will provide an important test. Holiday demand can lift package volumes, but UPS must manage the added workload without letting labor and operating costs erode its margin gains.
What UPS Investors Should Watch
UPS raised its full-year outlook to approximately $92.6 billion in revenue and $7.28 in adjusted earnings per share. It also expects about $6.1 billion in adjusted free cash flow, according to its earnings release.
The next question is whether higher-value shipments can replace revenue lost to Amazon while supporting sustained margin improvement. Investors should watch domestic package volumes, revenue per piece and operating margins through the holiday quarter.
UPS has demonstrated that fewer deliveries can coexist with better economics; the challenge now is proving that the model can keep working as the business grows.
