Ceasefires are a bit like New Year's resolutions. Everyone announces them with great fanfare, and the real question is whether anyone actually follows through. That's roughly where things stand after President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, which both sides greeted warmly on Sunday even as the bombs kept falling.

Carney Urges Russia to Honor the Agreement
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on X that after speaking with Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he believes the ceasefire "has the potential to significantly de-escalate the war" and protect thousands of civilians "from harm and hardship."
Canada "calls on Russia to uphold this agreement," he said, while continuing to work with allies toward a "just and lasting peace" for Ukraine and Europe.
Trump announced Sunday on Truth Social that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate halt to attacks on each other's energy infrastructure, and he warned both sides not to break it.
The ceasefire announcement came after Trump said Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin would supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel.
Zelenskyy Says Attacks Continued
Zelenskyy called the ceasefire "good news for everyone" and said it is important that it "become reality," while thanking Carney for Canada's role in developing the FREYJA anti-ballistic system with Europe.
However, Zelenskyy added that Ukrainian skies were "infested" with Russian drones all day, along with glide bomb strikes and attacks on energy infrastructure, including a power plant in Kharkiv that was hit that evening.
Over the past week, he said, Russia carried out more than 200 strikes on Ukrainian electricity generation and transmission facilities and 17 more on gas and oil facilities, killing more than 150 people and wounding more than 700.
Meanwhile, Putin said after his call with Trump that peace talks were unlikely to resume right away, citing Ukrainian drone attacks on Moscow.
Trump Says Ukraine Should Get a New Leader
On Saturday, Trump told reporters at the White House, according to Reuters, that Ukraine should "get a new leader who can make a deal," adding that "it's time for Ukraine to get a new president."
Trump has criticized Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, which he said have pushed up global prices.
