IonQ, Inc. (IONQ) is strengthening its position in quantum computing as a new DARPA milestone adds government validation to the company's technology roadmap and supports its push toward larger commercial deployments.

The stock rose nearly 2% in Thursday premarket trading after the company advanced to the final stage of DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative. The move came even as S&P 500 futures fell about 0.3%.

IonQ stock slid almost 10% in 2026. The stock has faced downward pressure throughout 2026 due to expanding net losses and investor caution regarding its growth mix despite its strong top-line revenue growth.

DARPA Advances IonQ To Final Stage

IonQ reached Stage C of DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, moving the company closer to proving that its systems can handle practical, large-scale work.

IonQ and DARPA signed an agreement worth up to $300 million that will allow the agency to independently test future generations of IonQ's Superion systems through 2029.

IonQ cleared the earlier stages by presenting its technical plan, development roadmap and approach to addressing key risks.

CEO Niccolo de Masi called the advancement "a significant vote of confidence in IonQ's technology roadmap and architecture for delivering quantum computing at utility scale."

Government Validation Could Support Commercial Growth

The DARPA program gives IonQ another avenue to demonstrate its technology to government and commercial customers.

As testing continues, IonQ plans to expand production and deployment of its Superion systems and add customers across commercial, scientific and security applications.

The independent review could also help investors assess whether IonQ can translate its development roadmap into systems capable of performing useful work at larger scale.

BofA Analyst Sees A Path To Scale

BofA Securities initiated coverage on IonQ with a Buy rating and a $60 price forecast in September.

The firm cited IonQ's position as the largest publicly traded pure-play quantum company by revenue and its broad customer exposure.

BofA said IonQ's semiconductor-based approach could help the company scale its systems. The firm also expects continued improvements in accuracy, system size and error correction to move the industry toward more useful quantum machines by 2030.

Its valuation also reflects IonQ's exposure across quantum computing, communications and sensing.

IonQ carries an overall Buy consensus rating with an average price forecast of $66.89.

BofA Securities initiated coverage with a Buy rating and $60 forecast on Sept. 28. Wedbush maintained an Outperform rating and $75 forecast on Sept. 22, while Mizuho maintained Outperform but lowered its forecast to $52 on Sept. 9.

ETF Exposure Adds Trading Sensitivity
