Sometimes a stock moves because of something it did. Sometimes it moves because of something a competitor did. Tuesday was very much the latter for Vistra Corp. (VST).
Vistra shares rose about 10% on Tuesday as utility and power-producer stocks climbed in sympathy with Constellation Energy (CEG) after it announced a long-term clean-energy collaboration with Alphabet Inc.'s (GOOGL) (GOOG) Google, tied to adding 890 megawatts of new nuclear capacity to the PJM Interconnection grid.
Vistra was up 9.93% at $159.28 in Tuesday's session.
Google Deal Unlocks $4.3 Billion Nuclear Investment
Constellation Energy was up 13.29% on Tuesday, setting the tone for the broader rally in power producers and helping explain why Vistra was rising much more than the overall Utilities sector.
The move in Vistra came as traders focused on Constellation's long-term collaboration with Google that includes bringing 890 megawatts of new nuclear capacity to the PJM Interconnection grid, a development that put fresh attention on electricity demand tied to AI and the companies that generate power.
Talen Energy (TLN) gained 12.15% in the same session, adding to the sense that Tuesday's jump in Vistra was part of a group move across power producers.
NRG Energy (NRG) rose 7.73% on Tuesday, another sign that investors were buying across the space rather than reacting to a Vistra-only headline.
The 20-year power purchase agreement will support more than $4.3 billion in upgrades across 11 Constellation nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, improving efficiency and adding new reliable power.
The project will sustain about 4,400 existing jobs and create roughly 7,200 construction jobs.
Under an expanded five-year technology alliance, Constellation will deploy Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise to develop an "AI for energy" framework focused on accelerating capacity delivery, optimizing asset dispatch and protecting critical infrastructure while improving grid reliability and affordability.
Vistra Nuclear Loan Support
On Monday, the Trump administration said they are reportedly considering roughly $4 billion in loans to help finance upgrades at three of the company's nuclear plants.
The proposed funding would cover projects at two facilities in Ohio and one in Pennsylvania. Vistra's Perry plant has a single 1.3-gigawatt reactor, while Davis-Besse has one reactor with 900 megawatts of capacity. Beaver Valley operates two reactors with combined capacity of about 1.9 gigawatts.
BMO Capital analyst James Thalacker maintained an Outperform rating on Vistra on Monday and lowered the firm's price target to $210 from $231.
