GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan says that Canada's planned West Coast Pipeline, officially called the Pacific Link, should alarm interior parts of the U.S. as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney shifts away from a Washington-dependent economy.

Patrick De Haan Says New Pipeline Will Push Oil Away From the U.S.
In a post on the social media platform X on Thursday, De Haan warned that "the entire interior U.S. should be alarmed as Canada fast tracks a new crude oil pipeline from Alberta to Canada's West Coast."
He added that the pipeline would "push more of Canada's oil away from U.S. refineries" that still relied on Canadian crude. De Haan also said that the Pacific Link pipeline "could negatively impact U.S. refineries."
In the same thread, De Haan also pointed to expansions of Canada's existing Trans Mountain system, saying the pipeline network is adding 90,000 barrels per day of capacity this year and another 210,000 barrels per day by the end of 2028.
The Pacific Link Pipeline
Notably, the Major Projects Office (MPO). According to an official statement released on Thursday, the Canadian Government said that "the MPO will work to finalise those conditions by September 1, 2027, clearing the way to get shovels in the ground."
The pipeline will run between the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia and will be capable of transporting 1 million barrels of oil to Asia every day. The project, according to the statement, will generate 140,000 jobs across Canada and generate C$100 billion ($70.3 billion) in revenue by 2060.
"Canada has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to become a global energy superpower," Carney said, adding that the pipeline presented the opportunity "to create hundreds of thousands of good jobs. To transform our economy. To diversify our trade. To become less reliant on a single trade partner. To achieve greater strategic autonomy."
Trump Touts SPR Loan, Gas National Average Falls
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump's Department of Energy (DOE) issued a request for proposal (rfp), offering oil companies loans of up to 40 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) as the Iran war continues to pose uncertainty over the global oil supply chain.
However, De Haan pointed out that the proposal was not seeing as much interest from companies, arguing that the bigger bottleneck is refining capacity rather than crude supply.
According to data provided by the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national average price of gas fell below the $4.5 mark on Thursday to $4.4137/gallon. The national average price of diesel also fell to $6.3895/gallon on Thursday.
