UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH)'s UnitedHealthcare on Thursday introduced its 2027 Medicare Advantage plans, focusing on delivering affordable rates, streamlined navigation, and integrated care for a rapidly growing senior population.
The insurer aims to make healthcare more accessible by reducing out-of-pocket expenses and expanding specialized plan options.
In August, some shareholders filed a derivative action against the current and former leadership of UnitedHealth.
The suit alleges catastrophic corporate governance breaches from September 2021 through July 2025, asserting that executive misconduct generated artificial earnings growth.
The complaint says the subsequent fallout wiped out more than $277 billion in stockholder value between December 2024 and August 2025.
Expanded Coverage And Lower Costs
For the 2027 plan year, over 94% of Medicare-eligible individuals across the nation will have access to a UnitedHealthcare coverage option.
Approximately 90% of eligible consumers within the footprint can choose a plan with a $0 premium.
Additionally, more than 95% of non-Special Needs Plan (SNP) enrollees avoid hitting their annual maximum out-of-pocket limits, with many spending under $300 yearly on medical services.
The insurer continues to provide $0 copays for primary care visits, preventive services, and Tier 1 prescription drugs across all offerings. Beneficiaries also gain access to dental, vision, and hearing benefits that standard Medicare generally excludes.
Targeted Support For Specialized Health Needs
UnitedHealthcare prioritizes Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans alongside specialized dual-eligible and chronic condition offerings.
HMO options will reach roughly 95% of eligible individuals, offering lower out-of-pocket spending compared to LPPO plans, where HMO enrollees save over $175 annually.
For complex care, Dual Special Needs Plans (D-SNPs) will reach about 74% of dual-eligible individuals to better coordinate Medicare and Medicaid benefits.
Simultaneously, Chronic Special Needs Plans (C-SNPs) will cover nearly 48 million eligible beneficiaries, offering tailored care models for conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic heart failure.
Modernized UCard Technology And Pharmacy Perks
The 2027 lineup updates the exclusive UCard by separating health plan information onto a dedicated Member ID card while upgrading the UCard for rewards and credits.
Partnering with Mastercard, qualifying D-SNP members can pay utility bills in real time. Members can use benefit balances at over 70,000 participating retailers, including Walmart, Target, and Dollar General.
Furthermore, UnitedHealthcare maintains $0 Tier 1 drug copays for almost all members, offers 100-day medication supplies, and supports a pharmacy network exceeding 60,000 locations alongside Optum Home Delivery.
UNH Price Action: UnitedHealth Group shares were down 0.12% at $366.62 during premarket trading on Thursday, according to market data.
