What Pixclara Actually Does
Pixclara is a radioactive diagnostic drug given intravenously for PET imaging. Its job: help doctors tell the difference between recurrent or progressive glioma, a type of brain tumor, and treatment-related change.
Healthcare professionals can use it alongside other diagnostic evaluations for adult patients, as well as pediatric patients who are one month of age and older.
With this regulatory decision, Pixclara becomes the only FDA-approved radiopharmaceutical imaging drug designated specifically for glioma.
Here's the odd part. International clinical practice guidelines, such as the NCCN Guidelines, already recommend floretyrosine F 18 PET imaging for managing gliomas. U.S. healthcare providers just never had an FDA-approved product to reach for. Now they do.
How the Mechanism Works
The diagnostic formulation incorporates a small-molecule targeting compound labeled with fluorine-18, a diagnostic radioisotope.
After medical staff inject the drug into a patient's bloodstream, Pixclara specifically targets membrane transport proteins known as L-type amino acid transporters 1 and 2, or LAT1 and LAT2.
Once the compound binds to these transporters, energy emissions from the radioisotope can be picked up and detected by a standard PET scanner.
What's Next for Telix
Beyond its approved use for glioma imaging, the diagnostic compound, referred to internally as TLX101-Px, is currently undergoing further evaluation in a Phase 3 registrational study.
Researchers are exploring a potential indication expansion that could allow the product to assist in diagnosing brain metastases in the future.
William Blair wrote, "Although a relatively modest contribution to sales, we are encouraged that the approval provides a means for Telix to diversify its revenue streams beyond the PSMA PET franchise."
TLX Price Action: Telix Pharmaceuticals shares were up 7.44% to $12.13 at the time of publication on Monday. The stock is approaching its 52-week high of $12.48, according to market data.
