Rocket Lab (RKLB) is having a good morning. The space company's stock climbed more than 2% in premarket trading Wednesday, and it's not hard to see why. Two things happened: the company launched a shiny new solar cell, and Cathie Wood's ARK Invest kept buying shares. It's like a one-two punch of good news, even as the broader market looks a bit wobbly. Nasdaq futures were down 0.46% and S&P 500 futures slipped 0.36%, but Rocket Lab was swimming against that tide.

New Solar Cell, Fresh ARK Buying
On Tuesday, Rocket Lab unveiled IMM Apex, a high-efficiency solar cell designed for space. The company says it delivers 31.5% conversion efficiency at the start of its life and weighs 40% less than traditional cells. That's a big deal in the space industry, where every kilogram counts. But the real kicker? IMM Apex ditches the germanium substrates that most multi-junction solar cells rely on. Germanium prices can be volatile, and supply chains can be a pain. By eliminating that dependency, Rocket Lab is essentially hedging against rising material costs and potential shortages. The product is available right now, with manufacturing capacity in the multi-100-kilowatt range.
Meanwhile, ARK Invest, the famously space-obsessed fund family, added to its Rocket Lab position. The ARK Space Exploration & Innovation ETF (ARKX) picked up 2,341 shares on Tuesday, worth about $154,000. That might sound small, but it follows a much bigger move earlier this month: ARK bought 705,102 shares across three of its ETFs over two trading days. When Cathie Wood's team keeps nibbling, investors tend to take notice.
Put those two pieces together, and you've got a recipe for a premarket pop. New product, fresh buying, and a stock that's been beaten down a bit. It's not exactly rocket science, but it does involve rockets.
Technical Analysis
Now, let's talk charts. Despite Wednesday's bounce, Rocket Lab is still trading below its major moving averages. The stock sits 4.9% below its 20-day simple moving average (SMA), 9.4% below its 50-day SMA, and a whopping 25.1% below its 100-day SMA. It's also 15.1% below its 200-day SMA. In plain English, the stock has been in a downtrend, and it hasn't climbed back above those key levels yet.
Here's a worrying sign: the 20-day SMA is below the 50-day SMA, which signals near-term weakness. And back in August, the 50-day SMA crossed below the 200-day SMA. That's what technicians call a "death cross," and it's a bearish signal for the longer-term trend. It doesn't mean the sky is falling, but it does suggest the stock is under pressure.
Momentum is also looking shaky. The MACD indicator is below its signal line, and the histogram is negative. That's a fancy way of saying buying momentum hasn't fully recovered. The stock faces resistance near $78.50, while support sits around $58.50. So there's a clear range to watch.
But here's the silver lining: over the past 12 months, Rocket Lab is still up 40.06%. That's a solid gain, even if the stock has pulled back significantly from its 52-week high since May. The question is whether this rebound has legs or if it's just a dead cat bounce.
Analyst Outlook
Wall Street seems to think the stock has more room to run. Rocket Lab carries a Buy consensus rating, with an average price target of $110.71. That's a big upside from current levels, assuming the analysts are right.
Bank of America Securities maintained a Buy rating but lowered its price target to $110 on Aug. 31. Citizens kept a Market Outperform rating with a $130 target on Aug. 11. And Cantor Fitzgerald maintained an Overweight rating and raised its target to $122 on Aug. 11. So the bulls are still out there, even if they're being a bit cautious with their price targets.
Momentum Score
On the MarketDash Edge scorecard, Rocket Lab has a Momentum score of 32.04, which puts it in neutral territory. That fits a stock that's trying to rebound but hasn't quite broken out. If it can sustain a move above resistance, the technical picture could improve. But for now, it's a waiting game.
Top ETF Exposure
One thing to keep an eye on is Rocket Lab's presence in popular ETFs. It has a 5.70% weighting in the ARK Space & Defense Innovation ETF (ARKX), a 4.07% weighting in the ARK Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF (ARKQ), and a 4.04% weighting in the Defiance Space and Connective Tech ETF (UFOX). When these funds see inflows or outflows, they can create buying or selling pressure in Rocket Lab's stock. So if you're watching the ticker, it's worth keeping an eye on those ETFs too.
Price Action
As of Wednesday premarket, Rocket Lab shares were up 2.43% to $67.47, according to market data. It's a nice bounce, but the real test will be whether the stock can hold these gains once the market opens and the day gets going.
