SpaceX shares are slipping Wednesday as the broader market takes a breather. Nasdaq futures are down 0.44%, and S&P 500 futures have shed 0.24%. But the real story isn't today's price action; it's what SpaceX is plotting in wireless.

SpaceX's Wireless Push Could Reshape Competition
SpaceX's deeper foray into wireless connectivity is turning heads on Wall Street. By combining satellites, spectrum, and potentially ground-based infrastructure, the company could carve out a niche in a U.S. wireless market long dominated by three big carriers.
Wells Fargo senior analyst Steven Cahall told CNBC on Tuesday that he doesn't think SpaceX is jumping into wireless because becoming a fourth nationwide carrier suddenly looks profitable. Instead, he sees bigger tech ambitions at play. Over time, SpaceX could build connectivity infrastructure that supports everything from robotics to autonomous vehicles.
Cahall envisions SpaceX blending its growing satellite constellation and spectrum holdings with terrestrial assets, like wireless towers and a Wi-Fi offload arrangement with cable providers through a mobile virtual network operator setup. That kind of network could open modest doors for cable and tower companies, but Cahall thinks the real pressure lands on established telecom operators.
"Telcos just facing another competitor, a three-player market going to a much smaller fourth player, that's still a net negative, for sure," Cahall said.
Still, he doesn't expect SpaceX to unseat T-Mobile US Inc. (TMUS), AT&T Inc. (T), or Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) anytime soon. Those carriers run networks built for broad, reliable nationwide coverage, and SpaceX may not need to match that scale to make waves.
Cahall estimates SpaceX could initially target roughly 2% of the U.S. population. That approach would require less spectrum, fewer towers, and less coverage than a traditional nationwide network. Plus, the architecture wouldn't lean solely on satellites; SpaceX could pair spectrum with terrestrial tech to work around the physical limits of direct satellite connectivity.
Analyst Outlook
SpaceX carries a Buy consensus rating, with an average price target of $227.14 from 47 analysts. Forecasts stretch from $115 to $800, reflecting a wide range of opinions on its potential.
On Tuesday, Wells Fargo kept an Overweight rating but trimmed its price target to $212. Pivotal Research kicked off coverage with a Buy and a $220 target. Oppenheimer, meanwhile, reaffirmed an Outperform and bumped its target to $280 on Sept. 2.
Top ETF Exposure
SpaceX holds notable weight in several tech-focused ETFs, including the Baron Technology ETF (BCTK), ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK), and ARK Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF (ARKQ).
SpaceX accounts for 6.21% of BCTK, 6.04% of ARKK, and 6.98% of ARKQ. That means big inflows or outflows from these funds could translate into buying or selling pressure on SpaceX shares.
Price Action
SpaceX shares were down 0.27% at $153.06 in Wednesday's premarket session, according to market data.
