It's a rough day for growth stocks, and Cloudflare (NET) is feeling the pinch. Shares are down about 2% on Tuesday as risk appetite fades across the board. The Nasdaq is off 0.15%, and the S&P 500 has slipped 0.32%. Nothing about Cloudflare specifically seems to be driving the drop; it's more about investors pulling back from higher-multiple names when the market gets shaky.
For traders, the question is whether Cloudflare can hold its ground after a strong run over the past several months. The stock has been on a nice tear, but the recent pullback has some watching key technical levels.
Cloudflare and OpenAI: Teaming Up to Fight Cyber Threats with AI
In more company-specific news, Cloudflare announced on Thursday that it's partnering with OpenAI to launch an AI-powered service designed to find, block, and help fix software vulnerabilities. The service, called Vulnerability Discovery and Remediation, uses OpenAI's Daybreak models, including GPT-5.6 Cyber. It combines AI code analysis with real-time data from Cloudflare's global network.
The system can identify high-risk flaws and automatically create custom firewall rules to block attacks. It can also generate code patches for developers. But here's the catch: no fix or security rule goes live without human approval. That's a smart move, especially in an era where AI-driven security tools are getting more powerful but still need a human touch.
The timing makes sense. Software vulnerabilities are on the rise. The National Vulnerability Database had already logged 60,475 vulnerabilities by September, which tops the 48,185 recorded in all of 2025. That's a staggering increase, and it highlights the need for better tools to manage the flood of security issues.
The service is currently available by invitation to select Cloudflare Enterprise customers through Cloudflare Managed Defense.
Technical Analysis: The Big Picture vs. The Short Term
Let's talk charts. Cloudflare is still in a longer-term uptrend, despite the recent pullback. The stock sits 10.9% above its 100-day simple moving average and 25.2% above its 200-day SMA. That's a solid foundation.
The bullish structure got a boost back in May when a golden cross formed, which is when the 50-day moving average crosses above the 200-day. That's often seen as a bullish signal. However, near-term momentum has cooled off. NET is now 5.3% below its 20-day SMA after retreating from its August swing high.
The relative strength index (RSI) is at 47, which puts the stock in neutral territory. That means neither buyers nor sellers have firm control right now. It's a waiting game.
Traders are eyeing $291 as key resistance. A move above that level could help stabilize the short-term trend and maybe even spark a rally. On the downside, $250.50 is a key support level. That area is close to the 100-day SMA of $251.59, so it could be a critical zone to watch if selling continues.
What Analysts Are Saying
Wall Street is still pretty bullish on Cloudflare. The stock carries a Buy consensus rating with an average price forecast of $341.68. That's a decent upside from current levels.
Recent analyst actions have been mixed but generally positive. Citizens maintained a Market Outperform rating and a $394 price forecast on Aug. 31. Citigroup maintained a Buy rating and raised its forecast to $400 on Aug. 10. Susquehanna, on the other hand, maintained a Neutral rating but lifted its forecast to $300 on Aug. 10. So, there's some divergence, but the overall tone is optimistic.
Momentum Score and ETF Exposure
According to market data, Cloudflare has a Momentum score of 85.61. That signals strong longer-term price performance, even with the recent pullback. So, while the short-term trend has weakened, the longer-term picture still looks good.
It's also worth noting that Cloudflare has significant weightings in several ETFs. It makes up 5.39% of the Amplify Cybersecurity ETF (HACK), 4.55% of the Global X Cloud Computing ETF (CLOU), and 5.68% of the Baillie Gifford Long Term Global Growth ETF (BGGG). These weightings mean that inflows and outflows from these funds can create buying or selling pressure in Cloudflare shares. So, if you're watching the stock, it's worth keeping an eye on these ETFs too.
The Bottom Line
So, where does that leave Cloudflare? The longer-term momentum is still bullish, but the short-term trend has weakened. A move above $291 could strengthen the setup and potentially signal a resumption of the uptrend. However, if selling continues, the $250.50 support area could come into focus. That's the level to watch.
As of publication Tuesday, Cloudflare shares were down 1.69% at $278.75.
