Tuesday was a good day for AstraZeneca's oncology pipeline. The company announced two major developments: positive Phase 3 trial results for a lung cancer combination therapy and a new European Union approval for its breast cancer drug Enhertu. Let's break down what happened and why it matters.

Lung Cancer Combo Hits the Mark
First up, the SANOVO Phase 3 trial. This study tested Tagrisso combined with Orpathys in patients with untreated, EGFR-mutated, locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that also shows MET overexpression. The results were clear: the combination significantly improved progression-free survival compared to Tagrisso alone, and this benefit was seen in both the high MET group and the overall intention-to-treat population.
The trial also showed encouraging trends in overall survival, which was a secondary endpoint. That's a good sign, though we'll need to wait for more mature data to see if it's a home run.
Orpathys is a joint effort with HUTCHMED Ltd. (HCM), but AstraZeneca holds the sole commercialization rights. This isn't the first time the combo has shown promise. Earlier studies, including SACHI and SAFFRON, already demonstrated clinical benefits, and the drug is already approved in China. So this new data just adds to the growing evidence.
Enhertu Gets EU Green Light
On the breast cancer front, the European Commission has approved Enhertu (from AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo) in combination with pertuzumab as a first-line treatment for adults with unresectable or metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer. This follows a positive recommendation from the European Medicines Agency's medicinal committee.
The approval is based on the DESTINY-Breast09 trial, which showed that the Enhertu combo cut the risk of disease progression or death by 44% compared to standard THP therapy. Median progression-free survival was 40.7 months versus 26.9 months for THP. That's a substantial improvement, and it's why regulators were quick to sign off.
And there's more in the pipeline: European regulators are also reviewing Enhertu for residual invasive HER2-positive breast cancer, based on data from the DESTINY-Breast05 study. So this drug could be expanding its reach even further.
Despite all this good news, AstraZeneca shares were down 0.81% at $160.81 in premarket trading on Tuesday. Sometimes the market just doesn't react the way you'd expect, but long-term investors might see this as a buying opportunity.
Overall, AstraZeneca is clearly doubling down on oncology, and these latest wins could solidify its position in the cancer treatment space.
