Broadcom Inc. (AVGO) is having a rough morning. The chipmaker's stock fell more than 1% in Tuesday's premarket trading, caught up in a broader pullback from large-cap tech names. Nasdaq futures dropped 1.02%, while S&P 500 futures fell 0.59%, setting a risk-off tone for the day.
It's not hard to see why investors are jittery. Broadcom is scheduled to report earnings Wednesday, and the market's mood ahead of the print is cautious. But while the macro backdrop is weighing on the stock, the company itself is making moves that could shift the narrative.
At VMware Explore 2026, Broadcom rolled out a slew of new products aimed at making it easier for enterprises to deploy AI. The company is betting that its private cloud and software tools can help businesses speed up AI adoption, control costs, and keep sensitive data secure. Here's what they announced and why it matters.
Broadcom Brings Leading AI Models to VMware Private Cloud
The headline announcement was VMware Private AI Cloud, a platform that lets companies build and run AI applications alongside their existing business software, all while keeping more data within their own infrastructure. The pitch: you don't have to send everything to the public cloud to get AI benefits.
Broadcom says enterprises can pick and choose from different processors, servers, and AI models, rather than being locked into a single vendor. Customers can run more than 150 open-source and commercial AI models, including offerings from Alphabet Inc.'s Google (GOOGL), NVIDIA Corp. (NVDA), NEC, Alibaba Group Holding Limited's Alibaba Cloud (BABA), and Z.ai.
They also launched VMware AI Factory, which automates much of the grunt work involved in setting up computing infrastructure for AI. According to Broadcom, this can cut the time it takes to go from newly installed servers to running an AI model from weeks to hours. That's a big deal for companies that are used to waiting months for IT projects.
The platform also lets companies share expensive computing resources across different teams, which could help reduce duplicated spending. In other words, instead of each department buying its own AI hardware, they can pool resources.
AgentMinder Targets Autonomous AI Risks
One of the more interesting announcements was AgentMinder, a tool designed to keep AI agents in check. These are AI systems that can independently access data, use software tools, and complete business tasks. That's powerful, but also a bit scary if they go rogue.
AgentMinder checks what an AI agent is authorized to do before letting it act, and it records all activity for oversight. Broadcom says this can help businesses deploy AI agents in areas like finance, human resources, and IT without giving them unrestricted access to everything.
Broadcom is also combining AgentMinder with its VMware vDefend and Avi Load Balancer products to identify unauthorized AI activity, restrict access to sensitive information, and detect unusual behavior. It's a governance layer for the AI era.
Broadcom Expands AI Software And Data Tools
Beyond the cloud and agent governance, Broadcom upgraded the VMware Tanzu Platform to help companies give AI agents access only to approved business data, while also tracking where that information came from. That's crucial for compliance and auditing.
Separately, the company introduced TrueSource Trusted Artifacts, which provides tested and supported open-source software and security fixes. This is aimed at developers who want to use open-source code without worrying about vulnerabilities.
Together, these announcements broaden Broadcom's role from just supplying private-cloud infrastructure to providing the software, security, AI models, and governance tools needed to operate AI at scale. It's a one-stop shop for enterprise AI.
Technical Analysis
On the charts, Broadcom is under pressure in the short term. The stock trades 6.3% below its 20-day simple moving average, 5.1% below its 50-day SMA, and 8.3% below its 100-day SMA. That's a lot of overhead resistance.
However, it's only 1.1% below its 200-day SMA. That level could be a key test for the stock's longer-term trend. If it holds, the bulls might have a case. If it breaks, things could get ugly.
Momentum is also weak. The moving average convergence divergence (MACD) indicator is below its signal line, and the histogram is negative. These signals suggest buyers are losing control.
Still, the broader trend has some positive signs. Broadcom formed a golden cross in April when its 50-day SMA moved above its 200-day SMA. However, the stock has retreated from its June 52-week high of $495. Key resistance stands at $407.50, while key support is near $358.
Earnings And Analyst Outlook
All eyes are on Wednesday's earnings report, scheduled for Sept. 2. Analysts expect earnings of $3.16 per share, up from $1.69 a year earlier. Revenue is expected to rise to $29.44 billion from $15.95 billion. That's a massive jump, driven largely by AI-related demand.
The stock trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 61.6, reflecting a premium valuation. That means the market is pricing in a lot of growth, and any disappointment could hit the stock hard.
Broadcom has a consensus Buy rating and an average price forecast of $511.13. Recent analyst actions include RBC Capital maintaining a Sector Perform rating and a $400 price forecast on Aug. 26, BMO Capital initiating coverage with an Outperform rating and a $455 price forecast on Aug. 21, and Erste Group downgrading the stock to Hold on July 7.
MarketDash Edge Rankings
Broadcom has a momentum score of 52.3 out of 100, reflecting mixed price action. Its quality score is a strong 95.08, but its value score is only 5.95, suggesting the stock's premium valuation leaves little room for disappointment. Its growth score stands at 31.41.
Overall, Broadcom has a high-quality business but weak value and mixed momentum. Wednesday's earnings report could determine whether the company's growth outlook supports its premium valuation.
Top ETF Exposure
Broadcom has a 9.94% weighting in the Invesco PHLX Semiconductor ETF (SOXQ). It also represents 8.49% of the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) and 8.12% of the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX).
Broadcom's large weighting means flows into or out of these funds can affect the stock. So if investors are rotating out of tech, Broadcom could feel the pinch.
Price Action
Broadcom shares fell 1.25% to $365.70 in Tuesday's premarket session, according to market data.
