Investor Kevin O’Leary is telling people to stop panicking about Canada’s tariff mess and start thinking like a capitalist. His take? The chaos might just be the setup for a once-in-a-decade buying opportunity.
Kevin O’Leary Says Canada’s Tariff Chaos Could Be a ‘Ridiculously Fantastic’ Investment Opportunity: 'I Want to Invest Where the Puck Is Going'

O’Leary Sees Canada Investment Opportunity
In a post on X Monday, O’Leary said he’s looking at the situation “through the lens of an investor” and urged everyone to focus on where things are headed, not where they are now.
“The analogy I love to use when it comes to investment is, I don’t want to invest where the puck is, I want to invest where the puck is going,” he said.
His logic? The current tariff environment can’t last forever because it’s too damaging for everyone involved.
“Carney cannot sustain 50% tariffs on the Canadian economy,” O’Leary said, referring to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. “That will put the country into a recession and he knows it.”
He also doesn’t think the U.S. can keep this up. “26 states in the US can sustain 50% tariffs with their biggest trading partner?” he asked, adding that President Donald Trump understands the economic stakes.
“So this is a politically motivated period of time,” O’Leary said, estimating the disruption could last “60, 90 days.”
For investors, that means a window to get into Canada “at the bottom” and potentially score a “ridiculously fantastic return over the next five years.”
Canada’s Political Pressure
Economist Justin Wolfers made a similar point last week, but from a political angle. He said Trump’s tariff threats have pushed Canada into a corner, turning the dispute into something bigger than trade: a question of national sovereignty and political survival.
Wolfers noted that the U.S. and Canada already have the USMCA, but Trump’s push for a new deal and his comments about making Canada the 51st state have fueled Canadian outrage. That leaves Carney with little political room to avoid retaliating.
US-Canada Trade War Escalates
Meanwhile, the trade war is escalating on multiple fronts. Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich called Trump’s approach “irrational,” warning that higher Canadian wood prices could worsen the U.S. housing market, especially after new-home sales fell 10.5% in July.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy took a tougher line, saying Canada would be “foolish” to think it could win a trade war with Trump. He predicted Carney would eventually return to negotiations as tariffs pressure Ottawa.
Canada, for its part, has vowed to match U.S. tariffs “dollar for dollar” starting Sept. 8.
Former Vice President Mike Pence also weighed in, warning that the tariffs could hurt American consumers and businesses. He stressed that “American businesses and American consumers pay American tariffs” and urged both sides to prioritize negotiations over confrontation.
