Boeing (BA) shares are getting a little lift in premarket trading Tuesday, and it's not hard to see why. The defense giant just landed a whopper of a contract: a deal with a ceiling of $131.23 billion to support the U.S. military's F-15 fighter jet program. That's a lot of zeros, even for a company like Boeing.
But before you start dreaming of F-15s rolling off the assembly line, let's pump the brakes a bit. The $131.23 billion figure is the maximum potential value of the contract, not a guaranteed payday. The Air Force has only obligated $343,740 in fiscal 2026 research, development, testing and evaluation funds so far. Future revenue will depend on individual orders placed under the contract. So, it's a big deal, but it's not like Boeing just got a check for $131 billion.
The contract itself is an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) arrangement, which covers aircraft production, systems integration, modernization, upgrades, retrofits, sustainment work, and the development of military-run depot maintenance capabilities. The Department of Defense announced the award on Monday.
Meanwhile, the broader market is feeling a bit more cheerful this morning. Nasdaq futures are up 0.91%, and S&P 500 futures are up 0.45%. Boeing shares are up 0.89% at $212.32 in premarket trading.
Technical Troubles
Despite the good news, Boeing's stock has been in a bit of a funk. Shares have fallen 7.23% over the past 12 months, and the recent pullback from late-summer highs has investors wondering if the longer-term uptrend can be revived.
Technically, the stock is in a tricky spot. It's trading 6.1% below its 20-day simple moving average of $226.01 and 3.3% below its 200-day SMA of $219.58. That puts the $220-to-$226 range as a potential resistance zone. Until Boeing can break above that, rebounds might struggle to gain traction.
Momentum is also looking a bit weak. The moving average convergence divergence (MACD) indicator is below its signal line, and the histogram is negative. That's a sign that buying pressure is fading. However, longer-term signals are more constructive. The 20-day SMA is still above the 50-day SMA, and Boeing formed a golden cross back in June when the 50-day SMA crossed above the 200-day SMA. But it also had a death cross in April, so it's been a volatile year for the stock's trend.
Key resistance is at $237.50, while $204 is the nearby support level to watch.
What Analysts Think
Wall Street is still pretty bullish on Boeing, despite the technical headwinds. Analysts have a consensus Buy rating and an average price target of $273.13. That's a significant upside from current levels.
Recent analyst actions have been positive too. Argus Research upgraded Boeing to Buy with a $265 price target on Aug. 11. Tigress Financial maintained its Buy rating and raised its target to $305 on Aug. 6. And BNP Paribas upgraded the stock to Outperform with a $300 target on Aug. 3.
MarketDash Edge Rankings
According to MarketDash Edge Stock Rankings, Boeing has a Momentum score of 16.48 and a Value score of 27.63. Both are pretty weak. The low Momentum score reflects the stock's position below key moving averages, while the Value score suggests it looks expensive based on common valuation measures. To strengthen its technical outlook and justify that premium valuation, Boeing may need to reclaim the $220-to-$226 range.
ETF Exposure
Boeing is a significant holding in several aerospace and defense ETFs. The Corgi Aerospace & Commercial Aviation ETF (AV) has a 4.21% weighting in Boeing. The iShares U.S. Aerospace & Defense ETF (ITA) has a 9.33% weighting, and the Invesco Aerospace & Defense ETF (PPA) holds a 7.15% weighting. Because of these large weightings, significant ETF inflows or outflows could trigger additional buying or selling of Boeing shares.
So, what's the takeaway? Boeing's F-15 contract is a big deal, but it's not an immediate windfall. The stock is facing technical resistance, but analysts see upside. It's a mixed bag, and investors will be watching to see if Boeing can turn this contract win into a sustained rally.
