Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) accused President Donald Trump of using Washington's Freedom 250 IndyCar race as a political "spectacle" to distract Americans from high gasoline prices, drawing a sharp rebuttal from veteran driver Graham Rahal.

Schiff Says Race Distracts From Gas Costs

"While you struggle with the cost of gas, Trump offers you the spectacle of an IndyCar race hoping you will not notice," Schiff wrote Sunday on X. "More taxpayer money spent on his self-aggrandizing distractions. And you get higher taxes and higher costs."

The criticism came as regular gasoline averaged about $4.10 a gallon last week, up from roughly $3.13 a year earlier. The Trump administration moved to end summer-blend gasoline requirements early to boost supply after the Iran war drove fuel costs higher. Trump recently said he would "never apologize" for gasoline above $4.

Rahal Pushes Back On Spending Claims

Rahal pushed back. "No, no, Adam. He wanted you to notice and bask in the pride of being American, watch great racing and patriotism on display," he wrote.

"Not only that, this was privately funded, not government, although it drove thousands of folks to the DC area that have never been. That's economic impact for you," Rahal added.

The funding picture is more nuanced. The Associated Press reported Penske Corp. paid the "vast majority" of race costs, including track construction and road improvements, while Washington handled some repaving. Reuters reported Boeing Co. Boeing (BA), Space Exploration Technologies Corp.'s SpaceX Starlink (SPCX) and Delta Air Lines Inc. Delta Air Lines (DAL) joined as sponsors.

Trump created the Freedom 250 through a January executive order as part of America's 250th anniversary celebrations. He and first lady Melania Trump took a ceremonial lap Sunday before Trump waved the green flag. IndyCar said the two-day event drew more than 215,000 spectators.

Freedom 250 Fuels Wider Political Clash

Schiff has repeatedly tied Trump's policies to household costs. He recently warned that the president's Canada tariff fight would "only raise our prices" and has criticized Trump as gas prices climbed above $4.

Rahal said the race appealed across political lines. "Hundreds of thousands of Americans, blue & red, as well as fans from all over the world loved the Freedom250," he wrote.
