Big banks are getting more comfortable with crypto, at least through the ETF wrapper. Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan both ramped up their exposure to digital asset exchange-traded funds in the second quarter, according to fresh SEC filings. This isn't just a toe in the water; they're adding meaningful positions, and they're not stopping at Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Morgan Stanley raised its stake in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF IBIT by 23% to about 16.5 million shares. Its Ethereum play was even more aggressive: the bank's position in BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust ETF ETHA jumped roughly 202% to 4.6 million shares. On top of that, Morgan Stanley opened new positions in two Solana ETFs and increased its holdings across several other Bitcoin and Ethereum products.
JPMorgan wasn't far behind. The bank boosted its IBIT stake to about 10.4 million shares, up from 8.3 million, and more than quadrupled its position in BlackRock's Ethereum ETF to roughly 1.17 million shares. It also added positions in Solana and XRP investment products, marking a broader embrace of the crypto asset class.
These filings underscore a trend: institutional adoption of crypto ETFs is growing, and the biggest names on Wall Street are diversifying beyond the two largest cryptocurrencies. The moves are notable because they came during a quarter when crypto markets were anything but calm.
