If you've been following the 2028 Democratic primary race on prediction markets, you know the conventional wisdom has been that California Governor Gavin Newsom was the guy to beat. Well, that's no longer the case. According to Polymarket, a crypto-based prediction platform built on Polygon (POL), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has officially overtaken Newsom as the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Right now, Polymarket gives AOC a 22% chance of winning and accepting the nomination. That's an all-time high, up 3 percentage points in just the last 24 hours and 7 points over the past week. Newsom, meanwhile, has slipped to second place with 17% odds, down 3 points over the past month and a far cry from his January peak of 40%.
For context, the market also prices in a 7% chance that Kamala Harris, the 2024 Democratic nominee, could make a comeback and secure the 2028 nod. But the real story here is the sheer amount of money riding on this: over $1 billion has been wagered on the outcome, making it one of Polymarket's biggest draws.
Interestingly, the picture looks a bit different on Kalshi, another prediction platform. There, Ocasio-Cortez and Newsom are tied at 17% each. So while Polymarket sees AOC pulling ahead, Kalshi traders aren't so sure.
Ocasio-Cortez, who made history as the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, hinted back in May that she wasn't ruling out a 2028 bid, though she stressed that her political ambitions go beyond just seeking higher office. Newsom, for his part, has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, calling him "one of the most destructive presidents and human beings in my lifetime." He's also taken Trump to task for the administration's anti-EV stance and for letting China take the lead in the electric vehicle industry.
AOC has been equally outspoken, accusing the administration of using intimidation tactics to suppress dissent and push Americans into self-censorship. Trump, never one to shy away from a fight, has returned fire by calling both AOC and Newsom an "embarrassment" to America.
So, what does this mean for the 2028 race? Prediction markets aren't polls, but they do reflect where the money is flowing. And right now, the money is increasingly on AOC. Whether that holds up over the next two years is anyone's guess, but for now, the crypto crowd has spoken.
