Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) used its fiscal fourth quarter earnings call to send an unusually direct message to investors: it believes the AI networking race is no longer just about keeping pace with demand—it is also about taking customers from rivals.
In a rare disclosure of a competitive win, the company highlighted a large enterprise deal in which it displaced both a networking and a firewall competitor, suggesting that its integrated AI infrastructure strategy may be beginning to resonate with customers.
The comments come as networking vendors compete to capture a larger share of enterprise AI spending, a market that is expanding beyond hyperscale cloud providers and into corporate data centers.
Cisco AI Networking Wins a High-Profile Enterprise Customer
Rather than limiting the discussion to revenue growth or order trends, Cisco Chairman and CEO Chuck Robbins pointed to a specific competitive victory.
“Notably, a leading U.S. global bank placed an order for 1,000 Cisco Systems data center smart switches, replacing a major networking competitor and a major firewall competitor, transitioning to a secure networking architecture which only Cisco Systems can provide.”
Cisco did not identify the companies it replaced, but the disclosure itself is significant. Earnings calls typically focus on business performance rather than competitive wins, making the decision to highlight a customer displacement an indication that management sees it as evidence of a broader shift in buying behaviour.
The deal also reflects Cisco’s strategy of selling an integrated networking and security platform instead of individual products, an approach the company argues simplifies AI infrastructure deployments for large enterprises.
Enterprise AI Networking Demand Continues to Accelerate
The customer anecdote was accompanied by signs that AI-related networking demand is gathering momentum across the enterprise market.
Robbins said “Nexus switch orders tagged for AI deployments were up more than 85% sequentially,” indicating that businesses are stepping up investments in networking infrastructure designed to support AI workloads.
The company also projected continued growth in its AI business, with Robbins saying its “hyperscale business continues to show great momentum” and that “AI infrastructure revenue [is] projected to grow to $7.5 billion in fiscal year 27, supported by demand growth and market share gains.”
Those comments suggest Cisco expects AI networking demand to remain strong not only among hyperscale cloud providers, but increasingly among enterprises building their own AI capabilities.
Cisco AI Strategy Could Open a New Front Against Arista
Cisco’s comments stop short of proving it is taking sustained market share from Arista Networks, Inc (NYSE:ANET) or other competitors. One customer win, however significant, does not establish a broader industry trend.
What the earnings call does show is that Cisco is becoming more confident in its competitive position. By pairing a rare example of customer displacement with accelerating enterprise AI networking demand and expectations of market share gains, the company is signalling that it sees the next phase of AI infrastructure growth extending well beyond hyperscale data centers—and that it intends to compete aggressively for that opportunity.
