California Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) is taking aim at President Donald Trump as gas prices at the pump continue to climb, with the average price in the state topping $6 per gallon. Meanwhile, bettors on prediction markets are wagering that prices will go even higher.
On Monday, Newsom's official press office posted on X, quoting a post about Trump's plans to build a new helipad at the White House. "Sir, we just want lower gas prices," the post said.
According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the average price for a gallon of gas in California hit $6.146 on Tuesday. Diesel costs over $7.145 per gallon. In Mono County, residents are paying an average of $7.069 per gallon.
Newsom has previously defended California's gas tax, which includes an excise tax of $0.60 per gallon, a state sales tax of $0.10 per gallon, and the federal tax of $0.18 per gallon. His office clarified that the state hasn't raised taxes recently, blaming the high costs on the Trump administration's lack of planning during the Iran war.
Over on the prediction market platform Kalshi, bettors see a 74% chance that California gas prices will cross $7.40 per gallon this year. There's a 65% chance prices hit above $7.20, and a 50% chance they exceed $7.60 in 2026.
GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan weighed in on global oil inventories, noting that it would take about 78 weeks for countries to refill their oil reserves to pre-Iran war levels, as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to disrupt supply.
