Here's a fun way to potentially lose six figures: bet that President Donald Trump will somehow acquire Greenland, a semiautonomous Danish territory, before the year ends.

The Bet That Has Everyone Talking
A brand-new Polymarket user with the wonderfully self-aware username GamblingRuinsLives created their account Sunday evening and immediately got to work. They dropped $53,000 on "Yes" shares for Trump acquiring Greenland. Then, apparently not satisfied with that level of risk, they added another $51,200 on Monday.
Total wager: $105,000. Current odds of this actually happening: 22%. The trader is already down 4.88% on the position, which tracks when you're betting against a nearly 80% probability of failure.
What's raising eyebrows isn't just the size of the bet—it's that this account has made literally no other wagers. That's unusual behavior on prediction markets, where most traders diversify across multiple bets. On-chain tracking platform Lookonchain openly wondered: "Does GamblingRuinsLives know something?"
A Suspicious Pattern Emerges
This isn't the first time a fresh Polymarket account has made waves. Another trader recently created an account just before the U.S. launched a military operation targeting Nicolas Maduro, then turned a $33,000 Venezuela bet into over $400,000. Sonar Pro, which tracks top Polymarket trades, suggested that trader might be a geopolitical insider.
Polymarket operates on the Polygon (POL) blockchain, letting users buy "Yes" and "No" shares using USDC (USDC) stablecoin. Winning shares pay out $1 USDC each when markets resolve.
The platform has weathered insider trading accusations before, most notably during the 2024 presidential elections. While it accurately predicted Trump's victory, concerns about foreign influence and market manipulation made plenty of headlines.
