When Moving Out Isn't Enough
Austin, a 19-year-old from Peoria, Illinois, thought he'd solved his problem by moving out of his parents' house to live on his grandfather's farm. Turns out, physical distance doesn't stop financial control when family dynamics get messy.
Despite no longer living under the same roof and receiving zero financial support from his father, Austin was handing over $2,800 a month. Actually, for four months straight, he'd been sending $3,000 monthly. Before moving out, his father had taken all of his income while supposedly covering some expenses. Now? Just taking the money.
When Austin finally worked up the nerve to suggest this might be unfair, his father's response was ice cold. "He said he was offended that I even had the audacity [to question it]," Austin explained during his call to The Ramsey Show.
The Hosts Didn't Hold Back
Co-host Ken Coleman was floored. "Hear us loud and clear: Your dad is manipulating you," he said. "This is crazy unhealthy. There's no good way to stop doing this other than just stop doing it."
Coleman then addressed the father directly, even though he wasn't on the line. "This is twisted. It is manipulative. It is wrong," he said. "And it is destroying, if not has already destroyed, the relationship with your son. Stop this nonsense. Let the boy fly."
The father's justification? Some kind of family tradition where 21 is the real age of adulthood. Until Austin hits that magic number, apparently dad maintains control over his earnings. It's creative, but the hosts weren't buying it.
Even Grandpa Wasn't Much Help
You'd think living with his grandfather might provide some refuge, but Austin revealed that grandpa knew about the whole arrangement. While the grandfather thought dad deserving "some" money was reasonable, he disagreed with the amount. Not exactly the firm boundary Austin needed.
"Then you need to get up out of there," co-host Jade Warshaw said bluntly. Coleman added, "Because Grandpa is not helpful."
The hosts encouraged Austin to make the obvious move: stop the payments immediately and use that money to rent his own place. With $3,000 a month, finding a decent apartment shouldn't be difficult.
"You made the first right move by moving out," Warshaw told him. "The next right move... get your own place."
What Austin Could Be Doing Instead
The show hosts pointed out just how much financial progress someone could make with that kind of money. Instead of funneling $3,000 monthly into what they called toxic family dynamics, Austin could be building actual wealth.
Investment platforms now let young people start building portfolios with minimal startup capital. Rather than losing tens of thousands annually to an arrangement that benefits no one, that money could be working toward long-term financial independence.
Coleman wrapped up with one final message aimed at Austin's father. "If you're hearing this, I got to tell you, my friend, I'd shake your hand. I'd have coffee with you," he said. "But I would tell you straight up that this is twisted."
The bottom line? Sometimes the hardest part of moving out isn't finding a new place to live. It's cutting the financial strings that keep you tied to unhealthy situations. Austin took the first step by leaving. Now he just needs to stop funding his own manipulation.
