Sweden Becomes Latest Customer for Satellite Services
Planet Labs PBC (PL) is having a good Monday after announcing a multi-year, low nine-figure satellite services agreement with the Swedish Armed Forces. The deal provides Sweden with a suite of satellites, space-based data, and intelligence solutions designed to support the country's peace and security operations.
Under the agreement, Sweden will actually own a fleet of Planet satellites and gain access to high-resolution data and awareness solutions. It's the kind of arrangement that gives a sovereign nation advanced space capabilities without the headache of building everything from scratch.
Building Momentum With Government Contracts
This marks Planet Labs' third major satellite services contract in the past 12 months, which suggests there's genuine demand for rapidly deployable space-based hardware and software. The company has now signed more than $500 million across three satellite services contracts over the past year, including agreements supporting national security needs in Japan and Germany.
Planet's pitch here is essentially offering governments a standardized satellite services model that provides a cost-effective and lower-risk approach to securing advanced space-based capabilities. Instead of each country reinventing the wheel with standalone systems, they can tap into Planet's existing infrastructure and expertise.
The company expects to recognize commercial payments from the Sweden agreement as revenue over several years. Importantly, Planet noted the deal doesn't change its previously issued fourth-quarter financial guidance from its Dec. 10, 2025 earnings release. The company also plans to leverage expanded fleet capacity to serve both government and commercial customers globally.
Market Reaction
Planet Labs shares traded 6.69% higher at $24.22 in early action, according to market data. The stock climbed as high as $24.96 during Monday's session before pulling back slightly from those peaks.
