Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran's third most senior official and former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, made the threat on Sunday. His warning isn't happening in a vacuum. U.S. officials recently revealed that the Trump administration is mulling preliminary options for hitting Iranian military sites, so Ghalibaf is essentially saying: you hit us, we hit back.
And Iran has options. The U.S. maintains significant air and naval bases throughout the region, including facilities in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Qatar. Ghalibaf specifically threatened Middle Eastern shipping lanes and Israel as potential targets. This isn't empty posturing either. Iran attacked Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar back in June last year, right after U.S. bombings on Iranian nuclear facilities. Ghalibaf even hinted at the possibility of a pre-emptive attack, which raises the stakes considerably.
Deadly Crackdown on Protesters
Meanwhile, the situation inside Iran is deteriorating rapidly. According to Human Rights Activists in Iran, protests have resulted in a death toll of 116, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. But the full picture may be even grimmer.
The New York-based Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) gathered eyewitness testimony and reports suggesting that hundreds of demonstrators have been killed since authorities shut down nationwide internet access last Thursday.
"CHRI warns that a massacre is unfolding. The world must act now to prevent further loss of life," the organization said.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to intervene amid the violent crackdown on Iranian protesters, but U.S. officials say no immediate action is planned. That creates a complicated dynamic where military threats are flying around while the humanitarian situation worsens.
