Remember when everyone thought Tesla Inc. (TSLA) would be the only game in town for self-driving cars? Gary Black, managing director at Future Fund LLC, wants you to know those days are over.
Tesla's Self-Driving Monopoly Just Got a Reality Check From Nvidia's New Tech

The Autonomy Playing Field Just Got Crowded
Black took to X on Wednesday to remind everyone he told them so. When he previously predicted that Tesla's rivals would crack the self-driving code, people were skeptical. Now, with Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) unveiling its Alpamayo autonomous technology, the landscape looks completely different.
Here's the part that should make Tesla investors pay attention: Black points out that over five competitors to Tesla's Robotaxi are already completing 750,000 paid unsupervised autonomous ride-hailing trips per week. That's not a future promise or a prototype demo. That's happening right now.
The real catalyst? Nvidia's Alpamayo technology, which debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026. Because it's open-source, any automaker can integrate it into their autonomous driving programs. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang called it the "ChatGPT moment for physical AI," which is either brilliant marketing or actually accurate, depending on how this plays out.
The technology uses a vision-language-action approach, combining radar, cameras, and LiDAR sensors. Huang claims the model has human-like reasoning capabilities, enabling companies to potentially offer Level 4 autonomous driving this year.
"Investors are starting to understand that unsupervised autonomy is about to become table stakes for every automobile manufacturer," Black said.
Ride-Hailing Platforms Could Accelerate Everything
Black's prediction gets more interesting when he talks about distribution. He expects Uber Technologies Inc. (UBER) to start offering Robotaxis on its platform at reduced prices as soon as regulators establish autonomous driving standards. The ride-hailing platforms, he argues, will make this technology accessible to everyone quickly.
"We can expect unsupervised autonomy to be democratized quickly via ride-hailing platforms," Black said.
The groundwork is already being laid. Uber and Lyft Inc. (LYFT) have partnered with Baidu Inc. (BIDU) and its Apollo Go Robotaxi company in London this year. Meanwhile, Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) (GOOG) and its Waymo autonomous robotaxi service are planning a London expansion later this year.
Musk Pushes Back on the Timeline
Elon Musk, never one to stay quiet when Tesla's competitive position is discussed, responded to Nvidia's announcement with some skepticism. He suggested that distribution could be a significant hurdle for the chipmaker's autonomous ambitions. Tesla's AI Chief, Ashok Elluswamy, echoed those concerns.
Musk predicted it could take five or six years before Nvidia's Alpamayo technology becomes a real competitive threat to Tesla's Full Self-Driving system. That's a long runway, but it's also an acknowledgment that the competition is coming, just maybe not tomorrow.
The bottom line? The autonomous driving race just became a lot more competitive, and Tesla's head start might not matter as much as everyone thought.
