Gabelli Asset Management is making a bet that people really, really want to get out of the house. On Friday, the firm launched the Gabelli Opportunities in Live and Sports ETF (GOLS), targeting what might be one of the more resilient corners of the consumer economy: sports and live entertainment.
The actively managed fund seeks long-term capital growth and carries a net expense ratio of 0.9%. As a sweetener, Gabelli agreed to waive management fees for at least the first year following registration.
GOLS casts a wide net across the sports and entertainment landscape. The portfolio spans sports teams, venue owners, media and content distributors, athletic apparel makers, and ticketing platforms. Rather than betting on one piece of the puzzle, the fund aims for exposure across the entire value chain that makes live events and professional sports possible.
Christopher Marangi, Gabelli's co-chief investment officer and portfolio manager, points to some attractive fundamentals. Sports-related businesses often generate predictable, recurring revenue streams from media rights, sponsorships, and season-ticket sales. They typically enjoy strong pricing power and low capital requirements, all while riding a broader cultural shift where consumers increasingly favor experiences over stuff.
That preference for live experiences keeps driving demand for sporting events, concerts, and other in-person entertainment, even as technology upends traditional sectors. Gabelli sees this market as relatively insulated from artificial intelligence disruption while offering growth potential through real estate development and global media distribution.
The fund follows Gabelli's established investment process, targeting companies trading below their private market value. The team also evaluates earnings expectations, valuation history, balance sheet strength, management quality, and the broader economic and political environment.
GOLS could appeal to investors seeking diversification beyond standard sector or broad-market equity funds. Sports and live entertainment businesses often respond to different demand factors than major indices, which can lead to distinct performance patterns during volatile market conditions.
