Elon Musk's artificial intelligence image generator Grok has landed in hot water after users discovered ways to exploit the platform for generating nonconsensual sexualized images of real individuals, including minors.
The problem? Some users figured out how to manipulate Grok into digitally undressing people in photos, creating fake images showing subjects in revealing outfits or suggestive poses. Even more disturbing, some of these images involved minors, which has understandably set off alarm bells across multiple governments.
French authorities have already launched an investigation into the matter. India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology weighed in over the weekend, posting concerns on X and calling for a comprehensive review of the platform. The ministry is pushing for the removal of any content that violates Indian laws.
Meanwhile, Alex Davies-Jones, the UK's Minister for Victims and Violence Against Women and Girls, didn't mince words when she called on Musk directly to address the issue. In a public statement, she questioned why Musk would allow users to exploit women through AI-generated images.
Grok responded to the growing backlash by admitting there had been "lapses in safeguards" and promised that urgent fixes were being implemented. But here's where it gets meta: nobody knows whether that response was actually reviewed by humans at parent company xAI or whether it was AI-generated itself.
