A TikTok employee explained the rationale on LinkedIn before the post was taken down, describing Minis as a way to reduce friction. Someone familiar with the program told the publication that TikTok sees Minis as an extension of its TikTok Shop success—keeping discovery, viewing, and payments all within its own ecosystem.

The Economics of Micro-Dramas

The business model is classic freemium: viewers get a taste with a limited number of free episodes, then hit a paywall. Within TikTok Minis, some apps are offering small discounts to users who pay directly through TikTok rather than downloading external apps. It's a smart incentive to keep transactions flowing through TikTok's own payment rails.
