Elon Musk's artificial intelligence venture xAI announced Monday that it's struck a deal with the Pentagon to bring its Grok AI models to the military's internal AI platform, GenAI.mil. Think of it as Grok going to work for the Department of Defense, with a security clearance.

Military-Grade AI Access

The partnership will embed xAI's entire Grok family of AI models directly into GenAI.mil, the Department of Defense's secure AI platform designed specifically for military and civilian personnel. The rollout is scheduled for early 2026, giving roughly three million DOD employees access to the technology.

What makes this more than just another enterprise software deal is the security level involved. Grok will operate at Impact Level 5, a high-security cloud standard that allows AI tools to process Controlled Unclassified Information as part of everyday workflows. That's serious stuff in government terms.

"GenAI.mil will enable 3 million military and civilian employees of the DOW to access xAI technologies at DOW Impact Level 5 (DOW IL5)," xAI explained in a blog post announcing the agreement.

The X Factor

Here's where things get interesting. Beyond Grok's standard capabilities, Pentagon users will also tap into real-time global insights from X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. The Department of Defense sees this as a potential information advantage for military personnel, giving them access to what's happening on the ground in real time across the globe.

"Users will also gain access to real‑time global insights from the X platform, providing War Department personnel with a decisive information advantage," the department stated.

Part of a Bigger Government AI Push

This Pentagon deal didn't materialize out of nowhere. It follows xAI's launch of "xAI for Government" in July, a product suite specifically built for federal, state, local, and national security customers. Musk's company is clearly betting big on government contracts.

And xAI isn't alone in this space. The company joins OpenAI, Alphabet Inc.'s (GOOG) (GOOGL) Google, and Anthropic in receiving contracts worth up to $200 million each. These agreements are designed to advance agentic AI systems across national security operations, with support from the Pentagon's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office.

Meanwhile, xAI is reportedly seeking to raise $15 billion at a $230 billion valuation, which would make it one of the most valuable AI startups in existence.

For context, Google continues to show strong momentum in the AI race, ranking in the 90th percentile for momentum among its peers, including AMD and Nvidia.
