America's Air Taxi Moment
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy just gave the aviation industry something it's been waiting for: an official roadmap for air taxis in America. In a video posted on X Wednesday, Duffy framed the announcement as both an innovation push and a competitive strategy against China.
"We're unveiling the FIRST EVER national strategy for advanced air mobility," Duffy declared, adding that it would help the US "beat China and lead the way in aviation!" The statement came alongside recognition that the aviation industry is "changing very quickly," with electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft and drones reshaping what's possible.
The Department of Transportation's Advanced Air Mobility strategy centers on integrating highly automated aircraft operating below 5,000 feet into US airspace. According to the official DOT statement released Wednesday, this isn't just about cool technology. "Advanced air mobility vehicles will benefit the American people," Duffy said, pointing to potential transformations in aviation, last-mile deliveries, first responder services, and defense capabilities.
Archer Aviation Welcomes the Plan
Archer Aviation Inc. (ACHR) Founder and CEO Adam Goldstein didn't waste time endorsing the strategy. "The future of aviation must be built in America," Goldstein said in the DOT statement. He emphasized Archer's commitment to bringing air taxis "into safe, real-world operation" in the US, adding, "We welcome Secretary Duffy and the Department of Transportation's leadership in advancing air taxis."
Archer is backing up that enthusiasm with action. The company recently announced plans for a Miami Air Taxi Network promising 10-20-minute flights across multiple regions in Southern Florida. Meanwhile, Archer's international expansion continues with a new engineering hub in the UK and the recent hiring of a senior British eVTOL engineering leader. The company also partnered with Anduril UK and GKN Aerospace to support the British Army and Ministry of Defence.
Duffy's Vision for Aviation
This isn't Duffy's first time championing air taxis. He'd previously stated that air taxis would "100%" be happening under the Trump administration, calling them a "safer and quieter" alternative to helicopters. He even predicted a major shift in how companies like DoorDash Inc. (DASH) would deliver packages, suggesting drones and air taxis could revolutionize the last-mile delivery sector alongside emergency response and defense applications.
