A Two-Year Rollout Plan
Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, has struck a partnership with Bukele's government to bring the Grok chatbot to every public school across El Salvador over the next two years. It's an ambitious undertaking that aims to fundamentally reshape how students learn.
"El Salvador and xAI will redefine the future of public education," Bukele wrote in a post on X, which Musk reshared along with the El Salvadoran flag.
Personalized AI Tutoring for Every Student
The initiative goes beyond simply giving students access to a chatbot. The plan involves developing a customized Grok solution specifically designed for personalized tutoring, tailored to children from first grade all the way through high school. xAI and the El Salvador government will work together to create new methodologies, databases, and frameworks for the AI-powered curriculum.
Musk framed the partnership in grand terms. "By taking Grok to every student in El Salvador, President Bukele is putting the most advanced artificial intelligence in the hands of an entire generation," he said.
Magdalena Bendini, Senior Economist at the World Bank who has worked with the El Salvador government on education policy, noted that the country has made basic education for children a priority. But she also pointed to "significant" short- and medium-term challenges ahead, particularly when it comes to providing access to students in rural or hard-to-reach areas.
A Mutual Admiration Society
This isn't the first time Musk has thrown his support behind Bukele. The tech mogul has been a vocal supporter of the Salvadoran president and his various government initiatives, including his controversial prison policies.
The admiration flows both ways. Last year, Bukele praised Musk as "one of the great minds of our time," and Musk returned the compliment by calling Bukele an "amazing leader."
El Salvador has become something of a pioneer in adopting emerging technologies under Bukele's leadership. The country made international headlines in 2021 when it became the first nation to adopt Bitcoin (BTC) as legal tender. Now, with this xAI partnership, Bukele is betting that AI-powered education could be the next frontier.
