JetBlue Airways Corp. (JBLU) is placing some strategic bets on where travelers want to go, and apparently that means more connections between Puerto Rico and points north. The airline announced a cluster of new nonstop routes kicking off in March 2026, targeting what it calls leisure and friends-and-family travel—which is airline-speak for "people visiting relatives and going on vacation."
The centerpiece of the expansion is San Juan, which will gain year-round nonstop service to five cities: Philadelphia, Jacksonville, Norfolk, Richmond, and Buffalo. To sweeten the deal and fill those seats early, JetBlue is rolling out introductory one-way fares starting at $99.
Deepening Island Ties
JetBlue President Marty St. George framed the move as building on the carrier's long-standing relationship with Puerto Rico. Meanwhile, Gov. Jenniffer González-Colón welcomed the added capacity, noting it should help pull in more U.S. visitors while giving Puerto Ricans better options to travel and reconnect with family stateside.
The airline isn't just adding flights—it's also renewed a cooperative marketing agreement with the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. Executive Director Willianette Robles Cancel said the partnership is designed to support key routes and drum up demand for the new service, essentially coordinating marketing muscle to make sure people know these flights exist.
Upstate Gets Some Love Too
It's not all about the island. JetBlue is also expanding its upstate New York footprint with new nonstop flights from Buffalo to Fort Myers and San Juan, plus fresh service between Syracuse and Fort Lauderdale. All of these routes launch in March as well.
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) gave the expansion his seal of approval, saying more direct flight options benefit both travelers and local businesses—presumably because nobody enjoys a layover in Newark when they're trying to get to Florida.
The Bigger Picture
Of course, airline expansion plans always depend on having enough planes that actually work. A separate industry report recently highlighted issues with an A320 fuselage supplier that's affecting Airbus programs, which matters because JetBlue operates a substantial A320-family fleet. Aircraft availability and maintenance pipelines can make or break growth plans, so keeping those planes in the air will be crucial for making these new routes stick.
JetBlue shares closed Wednesday up 3.29% at $4.71.
