Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) is making some serious noise in the AI infrastructure race. The chipmaker announced an expanded partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company (HPE) and a major capacity buildout from cloud partner Vultr that signals AMD is going all-in on capturing market share from the competition.
The centerpiece of the announcement is Helios, AMD's rack-scale AI architecture that bundles together AMD EPYC CPUs, AMD Instinct GPUs, Pensando networking, and the ROCm software stack. Think of it as a pre-integrated system designed to make deploying massive AI clusters less of a headache. HPE will be among the first system providers to adopt the platform, which AMD is positioning as an open, standards-based alternative that boosts performance and efficiency across AI and high-performance computing workloads.
AMD says Helios aligns with Open Compute Project rack standards and plans to offer these systems globally starting in 2026. The architecture is clearly aimed at organizations that want to scale quickly without reinventing the wheel every time they add capacity.
Solving the Connectivity Bottleneck
One of the more interesting technical details: HPE will integrate a Juniper Networking scale-up switch developed in collaboration with Broadcom Inc. (AVGO) to support high-bandwidth connectivity over Ethernet. The goal here is maintaining low latency as clusters expand—a critical challenge when you're training increasingly massive AI models. As anyone who's tried to scale infrastructure knows, connectivity becomes the bottleneck fast.
AMD also highlighted "Herder," a planned supercomputer for Germany's High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart, as validation for its data center roadmap. The system will use AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs and next-generation AMD EPYC "Venice" CPUs on the HPE Cray GX5000 platform. Delivery is expected in the second half of 2027, with full service targeted by year-end 2027, replacing the center's current "Hunter" machine.
Vultr Goes Big in Ohio
On the cloud side, Vultr announced it will launch an AI supercluster powered by AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs at a new data center campus in Springfield, Ohio. We're talking about scaling up with 24,000 MI355X GPUs—a serious commitment that positions Ohio as an emerging hub for digital infrastructure. This marks Vultr's first cloud data center location in the state and represents a significant bet on both AMD's hardware and the region's infrastructure potential.
The timing matters. As demand for AI compute capacity continues to accelerate, cloud providers are racing to secure GPU supply and get capacity online as quickly as possible. Vultr's massive Ohio deployment suggests confidence in AMD's ability to deliver at scale.
