A New Benchmark in EV-Crazy Norway
Tesla Inc. (TSLA) just notched another win, and this time it's coming from one of the most electric vehicle-obsessed markets on the planet. The company has officially broken Norway's all-time record for most vehicles sold by a single brand in a calendar year.
With 26,666 vehicles delivered in Norway so far this year, Tesla has edged past Volkswagen's (VWAGY) 2016 record of 26,572 units. And here's the kicker: there's still over a month left in the year for Tesla to pad that number even further.
Norway isn't just any market. The country has become synonymous with EV adoption, hitting 98% EV market share in some months. Tesla has been a dominant force there for years, regularly topping the sales charts.
Breaking Down the Numbers
The sales breakdown, according to data from CarUp, tells a familiar story about which Tesla models resonate most:
- Model Y: 21,517
- Model 3: 5,087
- Model S: 30
- Model X: 19
- Cybertruck: 13
The Model Y is doing the heavy lifting here, accounting for more than 80% of Tesla's Norwegian sales. That tracks with global trends where the Model Y has become Tesla's bestseller.
Why the Sudden Rush?
Here's where things get interesting. Norway is preparing to end its generous tax exemption on electric vehicle purchases. The change could add approximately 50,000 Norwegian Krone—about $4,878—to the cost of a Model Y.
That's not pocket change, and it might explain why demand has picked up recently. When you know prices are about to jump, buying now starts to look pretty attractive.
Norway's decision to scale back EV incentives will be worth watching. The country has been the global poster child for electric vehicle adoption, and these tax changes will test whether demand holds up without such aggressive government support. For now though, Tesla is riding the wave and breaking records along the way.
