Schumer Goes on the Offensive

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer isn't mincing words about what he sees happening to Sen. Mark Kelly. In a post on X Monday, Schumer accused President Donald Trump of turning the Pentagon into his personal weapon against political opponents.

"Trump is attempting to use the Pentagon as his personal attack dog. Just days after calling for violence against members of Congress. This is what dictators do," Schumer wrote, adding that he stands firmly with Kelly as the military probe unfolds.

The Pentagon is currently investigating Kelly, a retired U.S. Navy captain, over what they're calling "serious allegations of misconduct." The stakes are real here—Kelly could potentially be recalled to active duty to face a court-martial or administrative punishment.

The Video That Started It All

So what triggered this whole mess? Last week, Kelly joined five other Democratic lawmakers in posting a video warning about rising domestic threats to the Constitution. They urged military and intelligence community members to reject any illegal orders they might receive.

Here's the twist: Kelly is the only one of the six who can actually be recalled to military service. The other five lawmakers aren't subject to recall, which makes the Pentagon's focus on Kelly particularly pointed.

Trump didn't take the video lightly. He publicly threatened the Democratic lawmakers with imprisonment and even floated the death penalty—though he dialed that back later. He's accused them of seditious behavior for encouraging military personnel to refuse unlawful commands.

Vice President JD Vance has also jumped into the fray, arguing that the lawmakers crossed a legal line by addressing active-duty personnel. His logic? If the president hasn't issued illegal orders, then Congress members telling the military to potentially defy the president is itself illegal.
