Elon Musk has more than 11,000 satellites in low-Earth orbit, but taking on America's wireless giants requires something his rockets cannot deliver: reliable coverage inside buildings and across crowded cities.
In other words, the billionaire's space-based connectivity empire still needs a little help from the ground.
Satellite-to-cellular technology can extend coverage into remote areas where traditional networks do not reach. However, signals from space face limitations in densely populated areas and indoors, where walls and other obstacles weaken reception, according to the Washington Post.
That creates a problem for Musk's ambition to become a major U.S. wireless carrier. Millions of customers are concentrated in cities, precisely where satellite connections are less efficient and terrestrial networks have an advantage.
Why Musk Still Needs Ground Infrastructure
Space Exploration Technologies Corp (NASDAQ:SPCX) is trying to close that gap. The company agreed to acquire 65 MHz of spectrum licenses from EchoStar and separately struck a deal for low-band spectrum from Grain Management. Lower-frequency signals travel farther and penetrate buildings more effectively, potentially helping Starlink deliver coverage where satellite connections struggle.
But spectrum alone does not create a wireless network. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has said the company intends to build the terrestrial hardware and systems needed for a full mobile service. That means deploying smaller base stations and using towers, rooftops and other structures to connect customers on the ground.
SpaceX is reportedly circling Boost Mobile (a subsidiary of EchoStar Corp (NASDAQ:ECHO)), looking to acquire the discount carrier or gain access to its network, which currently relies on leased capacity from AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) and T-Mobile US Inc. (NASDAQ:TMUS).
There is a catch: those network agreements may not automatically transfer to a new owner and could require approval from the carriers themselves. That makes Boost a potential shortcut, not a guaranteed solution.
The Bigger Wireless Ambition
For investors, the distinction matters. SpaceX is not simply trying to eliminate dead zones; it wants to compete for customers who already pay AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) for everyday mobile service.
The company has a formidable satellite network, but building a competitive wireless business will require spectrum, ground infrastructure and partnerships. Whether Musk can combine those pieces faster and more cheaply than traditional carriers remains an open question.
The next milestone to watch is whether SpaceX secures a workable terrestrial network arrangement and turns its spectrum purchases into actual coverage. The satellite constellation may be in space, but the battle for America's wireless customers will still be fought on the ground.
