Inside the Numbers
Seagate posted quarterly earnings of $7.68 per share, topping the consensus estimate of $7.42 by 3.5%, according to market data.
Revenue came in at $4.23 billion, ahead of the Street's $4.14 billion estimate and up sharply from $2.63 billion in the same period last year.
The cash machine kept humming too: $1.7 billion in cash flow from operations and $1.5 billion in free cash flow for the quarter.
"Seagate delivered another quarter of record profitability and our highest ever free cash flow in the September quarter, demonstrating the earnings power of our business amid a strengthening demand environment," said CEO Dave Mosley.
"Data creation, retention and reuse continue to compound storage demand with long-term customer demand visibility reinforcing our view of a multi-year growth phase," Mosley added.
The Guidance Is Even Better
Here's the part that makes the selloff curious. Seagate expects second-quarter adjusted EPS between $9 and $9.40, versus the $8.58 analyst estimate. Revenue is guided to $4.7 billion to $4.9 billion, versus the $4.53 billion estimate.
That's not a cautious outlook. That's a company telling you business is accelerating.
So Why the Selloff?
According to market data, Seagate stock was down 8.63% to $610.21 in Tuesday's extended trading.
When a stock trades at that altitude, beating estimates isn't always enough. Expectations get priced in, and anything short of a flawless report can trigger profit-taking. The numbers here look strong on paper, but the market gets the final vote, and Tuesday night it voted sell.
