When American households start to worry about money, they rarely stop shopping. They change where they shop.
That is why investors watch Walmart Inc. (WMT) closely when the economy starts to slow.
Walmart shares are up 13.9% so far in October, on track for their best month since November 2014, when they gained 14.8%. The S&P 500 is up only 0.6% over the same stretch.
That 13.3-percentage-point lead is the widest monthly gap between Walmart and the index since March 2020, the month COVID-19 lockdowns began in the United States.
So is the world's largest retailer sending an early recession warning?
Walmart Led The S&P 500 Before The Last Three Downturns
Since 1985, Walmart has beaten the S&P 500 by at least 10 percentage points in a single month 30 times.
Seven of those months came during recessions, when investors were already hiding in defensive stocks.
Of the remaining 23, three arrived in the year before a recession started.
| Month | Walmart | S&P 500 | Recession began |
|---|
| June 1990 | +10.6% | -0.9% | July 1990 |
| November 2000 | +15.0% | -8.0% | March 2001 |
| November 2007 | +6.0% | -4.4% | December 2007 |
In other words, every U.S. recession since 1990, except the sudden pandemic shock of 2020, was preceded by a Walmart month like this one.
However, the signal also misfired 20 times.
In 19 of those 23 non-recession cases, the S&P 500 was higher 12 months later, with an average gain of 9.7% and a median gain of 14.4%.
Big Walmart months tend to show up before recessions. Most big Walmart months, however, are not followed by one.
Why Shoppers Trade Down
When prices rise faster than paychecks, families first cut spending they can postpone, such as trips, electronics and new clothes.
They then move what is left of the budget toward essentials and cheaper stores. As a result, discount retailers gain customers while discretionary sellers lose them.
The current backdrop fits that script. Consumer prices rose 3.7% through September, up from 3.4% in August.
The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index fell to 46.3 in its preliminary October reading. That is the second-lowest level in the survey's history, behind the 44.8 recorded in May.
BofA Global Research analysts Lorraine Hutchinson and Mary Sport flagged the same pressure in an Oct. 19 report on the consumer heading into the holiday season.
"We view widespread inflation as the biggest risk to sales for our coverage as higher oil prices impact consumer prices," they said.
Stock prices show the rotation too.
The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) is up 9.5% in October and 13.5% this year. The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) has gained 5.5% this month, but it is still down 4.3% in 2026.
This Rally Is Not Only About Fear
Walmart's move also has a company-specific side.
On Oct. 15, Deutsche Bank upgraded the stock to Buy from Hold and lifted its price target to $136 from $113, according to MarketDash Analyst Ratings. Evercore ISI raised its target to $130 from $125 on Oct. 20.
BofA Global Research analyst Christopher Nardone also pointed to Walmart's advertising business after a meeting with the head of Walmart Connect U.S., saying the company is "emerging as an agentic winner" in AI-driven commerce.
Meanwhile, the rally is partly a rebound. On Aug. 21, at least seven firms cut their price targets on the stock, and Walmart is up just 6.2% this year even after October's surge.
Prediction markets also aren't pricing in an imminent downturn.
Polymarket traders see a 7.5% chance of a U.S. recession by the end of 2026, but a 35% chance by the end of 2027.
Walmart's October rally looks like the months that came before the 1990, 2001 and 2008 recessions. It also looks like 20 rallies that were followed by higher stock prices a year later.
On its own, the signal points to a more cautious consumer, not to a recession date.
